This week, Foothill and Redding Christian high school athletes are being highlighted. It's time to meet the two Shasta Family YMCA Athletes of the Week for their accomplishments over the week of Oct. 25-31.
Turner Knowles, Foothill
Sport: Football
School: Foothill
Class: Senior
Team Contributions: Foothill running back Turner Knowles had a career day in a wild Week 9 win over Enterprise. Knowles rushed for 273 yards and 5 touchdowns — both set new career highs — to lead the Cougars to a 51-42 win over the Hornets. Knowles extended his season total to 1,277 yards and 21 touchdowns, good for the sixth most rushing yards and third most touchdowns scored by a skill position player.
Knowles is one of the best running backs in the section, and he put it on display in the Cougars win over the Hornets. It was the second time Knowles rushed for over 200 yards this season and the third time he's scored at least 4 touchdowns in a game.
Aliyah Mendoza, Redding Christian
Sport: Volleyball
School: Redding Christian
Class: Senior
Team Contributions: In the Lions Northern Section quarterfinal matchup against Fall River, senior outside hitter Aliyah Mendoza racked up 20 kills in four sets (5 kills per set) to help send her team to the semifinals. Mendoza also added 3 digs and 6 serve receptions in Redding Christian's 3-1 win over the Bulldogs. In a Nov. 3 win over Maxwell, Mendoza recorded 8 kills, 1 ace, 4 digs, 1 assist and 17 serve receptions as the Lions advanced to the Northern Section championship game.
Mendoza's 257 kills this season rank 28th in the section and second in Division VI. Her 20 kills against Maxwell were the second most kills Mendoza has recorded in her varsity career. She helped lead the Lions to a 27-3 record and will compete for the NSCIF Division VI title on Saturday, Nov. 7.
