There could be a third in the third round.

Jefferson and Ida will clash next week after both opened the playoffs with convincing victories on Friday, Oct. 30.

St. Mary Catholic Central also was dominant Friday and will host Whiteford if the Bobcats win on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Bedford and Gibraltar Carlson also were victorious Friday. They will meet in the third round if both are able to advance next week.

The season came to an end for Flat Rock and New Boston Huron.

DIVISION 2

Bedford 34, Livonia Churchill 30

TEMPERANCE — Bedford’s defense delivered a clutch fourth-quarter stop to give the Mules a victory on a night when the offenses on both sides dominated.

“It was absolutely a wild one,” Bedford coach Dave Mifsud said. “It was back and forth all night. Our defense, which has been so solid all season, struggled a little, but got the stop at the end.”

Bedford quarterback Luke Whetstone had a huge game.

The junior ran for 201 yards on 24 carries, including a 10-yard touchdown with 44 seconds left in the first half to pull the Mules 17-13.

He completed 17-of-24 passes for 157 yards and hit Jaxson Lestock for two TDs (11 and 28 yards) and threw one each to Dylann Shanteau (11) and John Derian (19).

Lestock finished with 8 catches for 94 yards and contributed 8 tackles and a pass breakup.

Everett Wingate (16 tackles, 1 sack, 1 pass breakup) and Alex Mapes (11 tackles) led the defense.

The Mules will play in round 2 at Grosse Pointe South, a 49-8 winner over Dearborn Heights Crestwood.

Gibraltar Carlson 14, Detroit Mumford 0

GIBRALTAR — Brennan Hudson broke a scoreless tie with a 6-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, then found the end zone again from 3 yards out in the fourth.

That was more than enough for a stingy Carlson defense in the opening round of the Division 2 state playoffs.

“Tonight was a defensive slugfest. I am extremely proud of the way our defense played all night,” Carlson coach Jason Gendron said. “We stayed aggressive, created turnovers, and held the opposition to just 81 yards of total offense.”

Gendron also proud of the offense for figuring out a way to score after the intermission.

“We found our footing offensively in the second half,” he said.

Carlson (10-0) stays at home for the second round of the playoffs to play Livonia Franklin, which clipped Allen Park 35-27.

DIVISION 5

Jefferson 48, Flat Rock 29

NEWPORT — Luke Beaudrie, whose senior year has been disrupted by a knee injury suffered in the season opener, looks healthy for the playoffs.

He threw for 213 yards, including touchdown passes to Hunter Barton (10 yards) and DeAngelo Johnson (31 yards).

The Bears’ biggest weapon was Drake Jones, who ran for 238 yards and four TDs.

Jefferson needed a potent offense because Flat Rock has lot of weapons, too.

“They can score points in a hurry,” Jefferson coach Rob Beaudrie said.

Jefferson (9-1) will host Ida in the second round.

Joel Scully threw for 210 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a score for Flat Rock, which finishes at 3-7.

David Riddle caught 6 passes for 103 yards and a pair of TDs and Jordan Godfrey had the other scoring grab.

Ida 41, Detroit Voyageur 12

DETROIT — Justin Crozier ran 19 and 64 yards for the first two touchdowns of the night, then Grant Pfeiffer found the end zone from a yard out to give Ida a 21-0 lead at the intermission.

Nick Miller ran for a pair of second-half scores and Crozier added his third TD of the night.

Crozier wound up with 206 rushing yards and Carson Weeman added 83 for the 8-2 Blue Streaks, who will visit Jefferson for the second round.

DIVISION 7

SMCC 54, Leslie 26

MONROE — Brady Reinhardt ran for 193 yards and 4 touchdowns on just 9 carries as SMCC scored two touchdowns in each quarter.

“We did some things tonight that were nice,” SMCC coach Adam Kipf said. “The offense was rolling, but we’ve still got some things we need to clean up and get better at.”

Reinhardt could not have been much better. He scored on runs of 20, 81, 22 and 8 yards and threw an 8-yard TD pass to Bennett Schafer.

Cole Reinhardt (1 yard), Landon Barron (4) and Cam Cousino (43) also ran for touchdowns.

The Falcons (9-1) will host the winner of Saturday’s Bronson at Whiteford game in the second round.

DIVISION 3

Port Huron 49, New Boston Huron 27

PORT HURON — Undefeated Port Huron put 22 points on the scoreboard in the opening quarter and never looked back.

Huron’s Jamil Brown ran for 118 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Cash Moczdlowsky threw a TD pass to Colton Ison and ran for a score. He completed 12-of-22 passes for 130 yards.

Huron finishes at 6-4.
