Big East What To Watch: Week One

We’ll get enough Michigan stuff next week, here’s the Iowa mascot to celebrate how much of a gangster Geno Auriemma is. | Credit: Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

As you read this for the first time on Saturday morning at 9:45 am Central time, we will already be less than 24 hours away from the first college basketball game of the season. That’s because we’ve got Sunday morning hoops in Europe! Hope you’re prepared for that!

Most of the games scheduled this week are cannon fodder types of situations, but there’s more than enough highlights to keep your attention as the week chugs along. We’ll probably get some accidentally interesting games along the way, it’s just that I can’t tell you that Xavier women’s basketball at Purdue Fort Wayne is worth rescheduling your entire life around, y’know?

Okay, let’s just get to the highlights…..

Sunday, November 1: RV Villanova Wildcats vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish (8:30am Central, Fox) — This is the men’s game in Rome….

Sunday, November 1: RV Villanova Wildcats vs #13 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (11am Central, FS1) — … and this is the women’s game in Rome. These are two halves of a spectacle on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean to start the season, so I figured noting both of them is worthwhile, even if at face value, the women’s game is clearly the more nationally relevant contest. Hard to argue against Sunday morning hoops that matters, though. Hopefully Pope Leo is able to stop by to watch his Wildcats!

Thursday, November 5: #2 Connecticut Huskies at #5 Michigan Wolverines (5:30pm Central, FS1) — To be clear, this is not the opener for Geno Auriemma’s Huskies, they’ve got Cornell on Monday before they head to Ann Arbor for this one. I admire his thought process here: “Well, we’re gonna have to beat a team like that to win a national championship in April, may as well get them used it now.”

Thursday, November 5: DePaul Blue Demons vs South Florida Bulls (7:30pm Central, truTV) — It’s DePaul’s first contest of the season against KenPom.com preseason top 100 team, and sure, USF has a new head coach after Bryan Hodgson took the Providence job, but do you know who’s in charge in Tampa? It’s former Xavier head coach Chris Mack! Feels like he might have a trick or two up his sleeve against a Chris Holtmann squad.

Friday, November 6: #4 Connecticut Huskies vs #16 Michigan Wolverines (7pm Central, TNT) — Nice to see Dan Hurley taking a lesson from Geno Auriemma about how to run his program and test his squad out right out of the gate. ALSO: Dan, please email your scouting reports to Shaka Smart after the game with notes on how things worked and what you would have done differently, thank you.

Saturday, November 7: Marquette Golden Eagles vs #17 Minnesota Golden Gophers (2pm Central, ESPN+) — This will be our first big test to see exactly what Cara Consuegra has loaded up on her roster this season. No, I’m not calling for the upset here, but after MU lost the away side of this home-and-home series last year by 43 points, keeping it respectable would go a long way towards telling us what’s up with the Golden Eagles.

Saturday, November 7: Providence Friars vs RV Nebraska Cornhuskers (6pm Central, FS1) — I can’t go so far as to say that this is a must win game for Providence or anything like that. It is, however, a very interesting relatively close to home challenge for new head coach Bryan Hodgson to see where his roster measures up to a team that the AP voters think should make the NCAA tournament this season.

Saturday, November 7: Georgetown Hoyas vs Maryland Terrapins (6:30pm Central, Peacock) — We’ve seen bad Hoyas teams win this game in the past, so we can’t immediately take anything important from the result of this one. But it is the first high major test of the season for Ed Cooley’s squad, and given how everything else is going, it’s probably a good idea to at least look pretty good in this one, right?

Sunday, November 8: #2 Connecticut Huskies vs #10 Iowa Hawkeyes (1pm Central, FS1) — YES, GENO AURIEMMA IS THIS CRAZY.

Sunday, November 8: Butler Bulldogs at Boise State Broncos (1pm Central, USA Network) — A sneaky important game for both sides here, with new BU head coach Ronald Nored facing KenPom preseason top 100 competition for the first time and Boise State projected to be in the NCAA tournament conversation come February at the very least. The Broncos are the projected winner here, so take that into consideration relative to Butler being projected to finish last in the Big East as well.
