Rio Ngumoha heaps praise on Liverpool teammate after Chelsea win

Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni show why Liverpool’s future is already arriving
Liverpool’s young players took centre stage against Chelsea, and the headline was familiar. Rio Ngumoha looked sharp, direct and confident against his former club, again showing why he is viewed as one of the brightest prospects at Anfield. He drifted out of the contest in the second half, that much is true, but the damage had already been done in terms of impression. For long spells, he looked like the most dangerous attacking player on the pitch.

Yet if Ngumoha grabbed the eye, Trey Nyoni may have been even better. That matters, because hype around academy talent is cheap. Production is what counts. Nyoni gave Liverpool exactly that, with a mature midfield display full of composure, volume and defensive graft. Andoni Iraola praised him afterwards, and Ngumoha was just as clear in his assessment.
Trey Nyoni performance backed by numbers
Nyoni’s night was built on involvement. He recorded 86 touches, more than any other player on the pitch, and attempted 76 passes. Of those, 65 found their target. The long passing still needs polishing, he completed only one of seven attempts, but the important point is that he kept looking forward. Seven passes into the final third tells its own story. This was not safe football. It was progressive football.
There is also a tendency to pigeonhole young midfielders too early. Nyoni does not yet look like an out-and-out creator and he did not register a chance created in this game. Fine. Not every strong midfield display needs a highlight-reel assist attached to it. What he did offer was control, tempo and defensive reliability.
He made six defensive contributions, including two tackles and four interceptions. He won three of his six ground duels and came out on top in his only aerial duel. For a 19-year-old in a high-level game, that is substance, not noise.

Rio Ngumoha praise says plenty
Ngumoha did not hold back when discussing his team-mate. “Trey is top. You guys haven’t even seen him at his top, top level,” he said. “He still has definitely another level to go and he’s only 19. The sky is the limit for Trey and I’m really happy that he’s getting the minutes that he can to show himself, and also show everyone else how good he is. Yeah, he’s top.”
That quote stands out because it comes from another teenager who knows exactly what elite potential looks like around him every day. Ngumoha himself has generated serious excitement, and with good reason. His first-half display against Chelsea had pace, bravery and intent. He attacked defenders and played with the kind of personality Liverpool want from wide players.
Liverpool youth development looks serious
The broader point is simple. Liverpool do not appear to be handing minutes to Ngumoha and Nyoni for sentimental reasons. They are playing because they are good enough to impact games now. There is already a growing sense that Nyoni can become a long-term starter, and performances like this only strengthen that view. Ngumoha, meanwhile, remains a forward with genuine electricity.
If Liverpool are serious about building the next phase of the side under Iraola, these two are not peripheral names. They are part of the plan.
