Canadians can soon apply for a $5,000 bonus if they have recently completed training in a high-demand trade.
Applications for the Red Seal Completion Bonus begins Nov. 16. The program is part of an $8-billion Team Canada Strong initiative created by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government to recruit, train and hire 80,000 to 100,000 new skilled trades workers by 2030-2031.
“There are good jobs waiting in the Red Seal trades, and not enough certified workers to fill them,” Patty Hajdu, minister of Jobs and Families, said in a recent statement .
“Earning a Red Seal takes time and hard work, and we want more apprentices to see it through. That is why we are introducing a completion bonus, to recognize young people’s efforts and help them get ahead as they start their careers.”
Must obtain certification to be eligible
Workers must complete an apprenticeship and obtain certification among a list of eligible Red Seal trades designated by provincial and territorial governments, which include bakers, cooks, hairstylists, carpenters, machinists, welders, industrial electricians, plumbers and roofers, depending on the need in each jurisdiction.
The bonus, which can be as high as $50,000, will be paid out to anyone who has completed an eligible certification on or after April 1, 2025.
“The Team Canada Strong initiative will support more Canadians in pursuing rewarding careers in the skilled trades while helping employers find the skilled workers they need through three key pillars,” the government said of its efforts to accelerate the number of certifications .

The government also hopes to increase the number of young people between 15 and 30 years old who want to pursue careers in the skilled trades in early 2027 by offering paid, entry-level work placements of up to four months through the Team Canada Strong Youth Placements program, a new $880-million investment over five years.
“It will help participants develop skills and gain exposure to construction and trades-related occupations, build professional networks, and advance toward long-term careers in the skilled trades,” the government said .
Government also helping employers
In addition, the Build Canada Apprenticeship Service will launch later this fall to help employers hire and train apprentices by offering up to $10,000 for first-year apprentices in eligible Red Seal trades.
To boost training, the government is also introducing online exams and digital logbooks to reduce certification timelines.
In addition, the Union Training and Innovation Program will fund a range of projects to support skilled trades and apprenticeship training in Red Seal trades.
Carney’s government said, by 2033, the country will need more than 1.4 million new trades workers as the 21% retirement rate of the current workforce could leave a gaping hole in the jobs market.
The government estimates that there will be more than 410,000 job openings just in the construction sector alone by the next decade.
