Julian Ward can solve Richard Hughes' worst Liverpool mistake

Richard Hughes was in charge of Liverpool's recruitment for the last couple of years.

And, even though he brought in a lot of exceptional players, he managed to spend well over £600 million on a Liverpool squad that still isn't the best in the Premier League.

Indeed, the Reds do have some of the best players in their positions but, as a collective, things just haven't properly clicked for them yet.

This is why Julian Ward being appointed as Liverpool's new sporting director is a positive.

The Englishman has been in charge of it in the past with new recently breaking that, back in 2022, Ward worked over the Christmas period to ensure that the Reds signed Cody Gakpo over another club such as Manchester United.

And, even though he's not been through his first transfer window yet, the recent links and rumours that have emerged make this new era feel like it's going to be a positive one.

Liverpool have not ruled out extending Alexis Mac Allister's contract yet

One of the main things hanging over the heads of everyone at Liverpool right now is the sheer number of contracts they have expiring over the next couple of years.

This summer alone, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson both look likely to exit L4 with negotiations for their new deals not yet taking place.

However, it's not just the legendary duo who could be about to exit.

In June 2028, Alexis Mac Allister's current deal is set to expire.

Last term, the midfielders performances were below par which made Liverpool choose to extend the stays of Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch instead.

This led to the Argentinian being hurt by Liverpool as, he felt like he'd done enough to also be offered a new contract.

However, that clearly wasn't the thought process of the Anfield outfit as, even now that he's emerged as Andoni Iraola's best central midfielder, talks still haven't taken place.

But, thanks to a recent update from Lewis Steele, that could all be about to change.

Alexis Mac Allister deserves a new contract for his performances this season alone

If anyone had watched more than two or three of Liverpool's games this season, they'd probably be questioning why Szoboszlai and Gravenberch were offered new deals over Mac Allister.

Before Iraola was brought in, it's clear that Liverpool saw the duo as their midfield for the next few years.

However, since the Spaniard uses a double pivot within his system, it's been made clear that neither of them can really play alongside one another.

Not only have they barely been able to win any duels that they've been faced with but, they also leave far too many gaps in the middle of the park.

This has resulted in Mac Allister or Trey Nyoni being paired alongside them which, in reality, doesn't make much sense.

But, since the Argentinian has been in such good form, it now feels like he deserves a new deal.

Admittedly, his inconsistency is a bit of a worry but, since he's regularly been one of the Reds' best performers this season, it feels like he deserves a new deal, even if he is getting on a bit.
