The Atlanta Falcons have had a frustrating year at the quarterback position. After both Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. were sidelined to start the season after a camp battle for the starting job, both were finally made available for Atlanta’s Week 3 matchup with the Green Bay Packers, with Penix getting the starting nod.

The Falcons offense looked entirely different with Penix at the helm, and Atlanta upset Green Bay for the team’s first win of the campaign. Unfortunately, Penix was sidelined once again in Week 5 against the Baltimore Ravens, and Tagovailoa struggled in his place.

Penix returned for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears, a 31-23 loss to the Chicago Bears at home. While Penix still figures to be the starter moving forward, Atlanta is shuffling things up behind him, in case the injury issues that have haunted him throughout his collegiate and professional careers rear their ugly heads again, according to ESPN’s senior NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Schefter reported on Monday that the Falcons made the decision to release veteran quarterback Cooper Rush, electing to bring on another veteran in his place in Andy Dalton.

Given how Tagovailoa looked in both his preseason action and in his limited snaps during the regular season, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise if Dalton supplants him as Penix’s backup.

Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski spoke after the game about being proud that his team bounced back on Sunday after a brutal start, but knows his team has to start games better.

“I’m obviously proud of how we continue to fight, but to start like we started is really, really disappointing,” Stefanski said after the game. “That’s something we talked at length about, and we talked at length about starting fast in this ballgame, and we did not.”

“We’ve got to get that fixed because we just put ourselves in the hole,” he added. “Disappointed. I’ll have to look at how we start and make sure that we are putting our guys in position, but we will own that one, and we will move on.”

If the poor starts continue, perhaps Dalton will find himself as Atlanta’s starter in the not-too-distant future.
