The No. 8 BYU Cougars scored a big win for the Big 12 with their 28-24 takedown of the No. 2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. While there was no shortage of controversy with the Cougars’ win, that didn’t stop the Big 12’s official X account to talk trash at Notre Dame.

In its post, which was captioned “shamrocked,” the Big 12 had two pictures side by side. On the left were the words “Last year: opt out” over the image of a cougar, and on the right were the words “This year: Outplayed” over the image of a BYU player.

The “Last year: opt out” line was a clear jab at Notre Dame’s decision not to play in last year’s bowl game against BYU after missing out on the College Football Playoff. And the “outplayed” was referring to their win on Saturday.
However, some fans did not take the Big 12’s trash talk too well, especially since BYU’s win was shrouded in controversy. Aside from the no-call pass interference on the final play, the referees also made the mistake of not putting one second back on the clock. The Big 12 even released a statement acknowledging that error, which some fans shoved back in their face.

Another fan posted a photo of the game clock with one second remaining, and added the caption, “Outreffed.”
“The Big 12. Where games last 59 minutes and 59 seconds,” one fan cheekily wrote.

“Guess that explains the no call pass interference and not recognizing there was one second left on the clock,” another said.“Genuinely, you guys are a joke of a conference. You are the teams that were second rate from the mergers,” another fan lashed out.Given the events of the last couple of years, Notre Dame-BYU is bubbling into quite a college football rivalry. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in 2027, so there could be some more fireworks there as well.
