Sam Darnold was not the best player on the Super Bowl-winning Seattle Seahawks last season, but he was one of the biggest reasons why they were able to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. A team does not require a superstar quarterback to reach the mountaintop, but it does need a steady one who can navigate rough terrain and lift his teammates up when necessary. He met that standard and noticeably surpassed it during the NFC Championship. There are still skeptics, however.
Including Seahawks great Richard Sherman. The Super Bowl 48 champion and three-time First-Team All-Pro cornerback was seen hugging Seattle players before Thursday’s game versus the Denver Broncos, but in regards to No. 14, he made a rather unfair statement.
“Sam Darnold got to earn a hug at this point,” Sherman said, per Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times. Woof.

The two-time Pro Bowl selection can certainly be criticized. He is averaging a modest 188.8 passing yards per game and has thrown seven touchdowns and five interceptions through four starts this season. While there is plenty of room for improvement, Darnold has earned more respect. He outplayed MVP Matthew Stafford in the aforementioned NFC title clash and did not toss a single pick last postseason.
A stellar roster and superb coaching should not eclipse his contributions to that historic Seahawks run. A renowned Stanford graduate and accomplished ex-player like Richard Sherman should know better. Sam Darnold should be grateful for the insult, though.
This is just the bulletin board material a reigning Super Bowl champ needs, even if Sherman’s intentions are not nearly as noble. The former No. 3 overall draft pick thrived on being counted out before, and he now has the chance to do so again.
In the aftermath of Sherman’s slight, a surely heartbroken Darnold will try to summon up the strength to lead a successful effort in Denver.
