Newcastle struggle as Jaissle's vertical football faces scrutiny
· Yahoo Sports
Newcastle United suffered a 4-1 defeat at Coventry, exposing tactical problems under manager Matthias Jaissle. The result follows a heavy loss at Leeds United and has raised questions about the implementation of Jaissle's "vertical football" philosophy.
The club underwent a significant squad transformation over the summer. Bruno Guimaraes joined Arsenal, Sandro Tonali moved to Tottenham Hotspur, and Anthony Gordon signed for Barcelona. Manager Eddie Howe resigned before the season began. All eight of the club's summer signings are under the age of 24.

Jaissle has implemented a 4-2-3-1 formation, replacing the 4-3-3 used by Howe. The system focuses on high pressing in a 4-4-2 without the ball and rapid transitions to the forward line upon recovery. Defender Malick Thiaw stated that Jaissle demands intensity from every player regardless of experience.
Newcastle spent £115 million on three young players: Lukas Hornicek, Matias Fernandez-Pardo, and Bazoumana Toure. All three have struggled with errors. Fernandez-Pardo missed several chances at Coventry, while Hornicek was responsible for early mistakes in the match.
The team have recorded 12 errors leading to shots, the most in the Premier League, while averaging just over three efforts on target per match. Jaissle’s side have also been hit by an injury crisis, with Dan Burn and Joelinton set to miss much of the season. Their next test comes against Aston Villa.
