Jerry Jones is making up stories

I regret to inform you that Jerry Jones is making stuff up.
Speaking with 105.3 The Fan (the Cowboys’ flagship radio station) the 84-year-old Jones recently recounted a story of a memorable trip he made to Green Bay.

As quoted by The Athletic’s Jon Marchota, Jones and his young grandchildren and an, um, interesting encounter with a Green Bay Packers fan after a game about 25 years ago.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones this morning on @1053thefan sharing one of his "greatest memories" from his trips to Green Bay: "After the game against (the Packers) maybe 25 years ago, all of my grandchildren were very small, 4 or 5 years old. And I had a car full of them. It was so…

Unfortunately for Jones, there’s no game in Cowboys history that lines up with the particulars of his yarn.
Jones bought the Cowboys in 1989, and Dallas has only won in Green Bay three times since then, either in the playoffs or in the regular season.
The Cowboys’ victories in 2016 and 2008 both came on relatively warm days (kickoff temperatures of 69 and 64 degrees, respectively, according to Pro Football Reference), so that doesn’t fit Jones’ story about the incident happening on a cold day. We can set those days aside.
The Cowboys also beat the Packers in 1991, and the kickoff temperature that day was just 44 degrees. That’s not exactly cold, but for a family visiting Wisconsin from Texas, it might be cold enough to come across as “so cold” in Jones’ recollection.
But there are further problems! First, that game didn’t actually take place in Green Bay. The 1991 Packers/Cowboys game took place at Milwaukee County Stadium. Maybe Jones just remembered the location wrong, but that seems like a pretty big miss, especially for a story positioned as a memory of his time visiting Green Bay.
Even more importantly, Jones couldn’t have had his grandkids in the car with him. The 1991 game wasn’t 25 years ago (I’m sorry to say) — it’s 35 years in the past, or close enough to it. Jones’ three children would have been 27, 25, and 22 at the time, and the oldest of their children whose age I could verify wasn’t born until 1992. Jones simply didn’t have any grandchildren old enough to be with him in a car in 1991.
In summary: the Cowboys wins Jones can remember either were too recent and warm (2016 and 2008) or not that cold and not in Green Bay and his grandkids couldn’t have been with him anyway(1991).
Maybe he’s recalling an incident that actually took place after a Cowboys loss? It was pretty frigid when the Packers beat the Cowboys in the 2014 playoffs (24 degrees at kickoff, Dez didn’t catch it) and in 1997 (23 degrees, Dorsey Levens ran wild). And if we’re calling the 44-degree day in Milwaukee cold for Texas residents, the Packers’ 2010 romp over Dallas (43 degrees at kickoff, Wade Phillips got fired afterwards) might also qualify.
It certainly wouldn’t be out of character for Packers fans to engage in a bit of extracurricular taunting of the variety that Jones recalled after a win. Similar behavior was alleged to have been the inspiration for Randy Moss’s famous “disgusting act” celebration (not terribly disgusting, in all honesty). It’s certainly possible something like that happened and Jones is just choosing to remember the context a bit differently.
Or he’s just old and forgetful and making up stories that he knows his audience will eat up. It’s probably not going to be that cold in Green Bay on Sunday, but maybe the Packers and their fans can give him another Wisconsin trip to remember.
Or forget, as the case seems to be.
