AZFamily and FOX 10 Phoenix reported that Daniel Jacob Thompson, 48, and Michael Charles Hummel, 30, were arrested on Friday, Oct. 9, just one day after Phoenix police shared surveillance footage of two men breaking into the storage unit.

In its initial social media post, Phoenix police wrote that the theft took place on Sept. 27 at a storage facility near the city’s 24th Street and Campbell Avenue. The unit belonged to former MLB player Daniel Johnson and his fiancée, Alison Wysong, according to FOX 10 and ABC 15.

The majority of the stolen items were clothing — including shirts, hoodies, jackets, shorts, long-sleeve shirts, sleeveless hoodies, batting gloves and hats — as well as laptops and purses, Phoenix Sgt. Sheree Lee told ABC15.

Johnson and Wysong told the outlet that they were storing the apparel and other items while their home was being remodeled. In total, more than $90,000 worth of items were stolen.

“I’ve had all the same gear from multiple teams,” said Johnson, who played for Cleveland, Baltimore, San Francisco and Houston during his pro baseball career.

“A lot of the other things were replaceable,” the MLB alum added to FOX 10. “But when it comes to the baseball... apparel and memorabilia that I had for over my 10 years... it really was a gut buster because I knew that unless I played for all those teams, there’s no guarantee that I get that stuff back.”

The two suspects were arrested after a pawn shop employee recognized them from a police flier, according to FOX 10.

“The employee of the pawn shop had recognized these individuals... and he notified officers,” Sgt. Lee said, telling the outlet that officers then executed a search warrant at the suspects’ home.

There, law enforcement located “shoes, laptop computers and MLB gear belonging to this victim with his name and number on it,” Lee said, adding that the suspects hit several units at the storage facility.

“It wasn’t targeted in any way,” the police sergeant added. “They were going through the facility, breaking locks to get inside.”

Speaking with FOX 10, Johnson and his fiancée said they’re grateful that police were able to make arrests in the case.

“It does sound like people really have been impacted, not just us. And we’re hoping that our story is the one that really nails the guys and that everybody else can really get their belongings back as well,” Wysong said.

Phoenix police are asking any additional victims who may have had items stolen from the storage facility to contact detectives at 602-262-6151.
