PORTAGE – St. Mary Catholic Central’s Christian Craanen held his own against the top runners in the state.
The junior took placed fourth in Division 3 against most of the top runners in the state at the prestigious Portage Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Craanen’s time of 19:35.5 was just over 10 seconds behind winner Will Hulin of Centreville in the Division 3 boys race.
Cameron Crane of New Boston Huron was the 17th finisher in the Division 2 boys race.
Grace Pacheco and Zoey Cheney of New Boston Huron ran 45th and 47th, respectively, for Division 2 girls. Ella Baker was just behind in 49th.
SATURDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Mason Tulik, Jefferson: Posted a personal-best 17:02.9 to finish fourth and help Jefferson claim second place in the upper division of the Hudson Boosters Invitational. He was supported by Carter Lee (18), Gabe Busen (25), Maddex Shotewell and Jonah Busen. Caleb Healey (7), Porter Ravary (9) and Weston Albright (17) helped Erie Mason claim third place in the lower division. Mason Edelbrock of Dundee hit a season best and finished 29th.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Claire Miller, Jefferson: Ran 20:17.1 to take second in the upper division of the Hudson Boosters Invitational. Teammate Randee Mulerin was 31st. Jaelynn Horton (23) and Tanylei Neff (30) led Erie Mason in the lower division. Lydia Richard turned in a season-best to take 24th for Dundee.
BOYS SOCCER
Rooney Scoles, Monroe: Netted the winning goal on a penalty kick as the Trojans closed their regular season with a 2-1 win over defending Division 1 state runner-up Ann Arbor Huron. Colin Gray tied the game with a header off a free kick by Luis Diaz. Monroe heads into the state tournament with a 6-15-1 record. “A well-deserved win and a huge confidence booster heading into the playoffs,” Monroe coach Ian Cooke said.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Karis Beaton, Monroe: Placed 15th in the breastroke and 16th in the 100-yard freestyle at the Michigan Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Championships. Sophia Smith fell just short of state-qualifying times in both the 50 freestyle and breaststroke with a pair of personal bests and the medley and 200 freestyle relays hit season-best times.
VOLLEYBALL
Henley Stubleski, Erie Mason: Notched 44 assists as the Eagles beat Grosse Ile and Westland John Glenn and fell to Allen Park and Woodhaven in the Allen Park Scream Tournament. Other leaders were Addie Homrich (23 kills), Karlee Frank (13 blocks), Zoie Stubleski (41 digs) and Kaylee Wright (29 assists).
