Christopher Bell didn’t need a long post-race interview to make his feelings clear.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver came painfully close to winning Sunday’s Bank of America 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. But when it was over, there was little satisfaction in knowing how close he’d gotten.
Bell was visibly disappointed as he spoke with reporters. His answers were short, his expression said plenty, and he seemed far more interested in moving on than dissecting another missed opportunity.
“I got a lot closer than I thought I was going to,” Bell said on pit road following the race.
It was a revealing admission from a driver who had started 17th after Saturday’s qualifying session was washed out by rain.
Bell hadn’t necessarily expected to be fighting for the win. By the closing stages, however, he was right in the thick of it. And suddenly, a race that had offered the possibility of a solid points day had become something much bigger.
That’s what made the outcome sting.
Christopher Bell Keeps Post-Race Comments Brief at Charlotte
Bell didn’t offer much of an explanation for his disappointment. He didn’t need to.
The frustration was evident in his face and the way he delivered his answers. This wasn’t a driver celebrating a strong recovery through the field. It was someone who knew how close he’d come to leaving Charlotte with a trophy.
Still, Bell found a reason to be optimistic about what lies ahead.
“I mean we should be really good at the next couple of races,” he said.
“Hopefully we keep bringing these fast race cars, so yeah.”
There was no elaborate assessment of the team’s performance, no attempt to dress up the result. Just a few words about the speed of his car and the hope that it carries over.
For Bell, that might have been the most frustrating part of all. The No. 20 Toyota had the speed to contend, and opportunities like that aren’t guaranteed, especially this late in the season.
Bell Looks Ahead With NASCAR Championship Still in Reach
With Charlotte complete, only four races remain in NASCAR’s 2026 championship Chase.
Bell entered Sunday’s race third in the standings, 55 points behind leader Kyle Larson. That makes every strong finish valuable, but it also makes missed opportunities harder to swallow.
The good news for Bell is that he clearly believes his team has the equipment to keep fighting at the front.
The harder part is turning that speed into victories before the season runs out.
On Sunday, Bell came closer than he expected. Judging by his reaction afterward, that wasn’t nearly close enough.
