The New England Patriots are keeping their options open as they look to elevate their offensive backfield. According to NFL insider Ari Meirov on X, the Patriots hosted veteran free-agent running back Jamaal Williams for a workout on Tuesday.
New England currently relies on lead ball-carrier Rhamondre Stevenson and backup TreVeyon Henderson to handle the bulk of the workload. Henderson missed the season opener with an ankle injury before returning to action, but the overall run game has lacked consistency. Through four games, the team averages just 3.9 yards per carry, ranking 18th in the NFL. Adding a proven goal-line runner could give the offense a much-needed physical identity.
Williams brings plenty of battle-tested experience to Foxborough. The Green Bay Packers originally selected the 31-year-old in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of BYU. After spending four seasons in Green Bay, he enjoyed a sensational breakout year with the Detroit Lions in 2022. That season, Williams rushed for 1,066 yards and led the entire league with 17 rushing touchdowns.

He later spent two seasons with the New Orleans Saints, recording 48 carries for 164 yards and a touchdown across 14 appearances during the 2024 campaign. Across eight NFL seasons, the veteran tailback has compiled 4,122 rushing yards, 1,310 receiving yards, and 40 total touchdowns. Beyond his numbers, his expressive personality and leadership make him a beloved presence in any locker room.
While New England did not sign Williams immediately, opting instead to sign cornerback Al’Zillion Hamilton to the practice squad after hosting a five-player tryout, the front office holds open roster spots after recently releasing edge rusher Jose Ramirez. Williams was joined at the workout by offensive tackle Cody Ford and tight end Josh Kattus.
Whether Williams signs now or remains on speed dial as the season unfolds, his workout demonstrates that New England is actively seeking veteran depth and tough yards to bolster its ground attack.
