U.S. authorities charge 30-year-old in Tumbler Ridge shooting investigation

A 30-year-old Washington state resident has been arrested and charged in connection with the Tumbler Ridge, B.C., mass shooting in February.
Acting U.S. attorney Neil Floyd for the Western District of Washington said in a news release on Tuesday that the accused has been charged with “conspiracy to murder persons in a foreign country.”
No other details were made available in the news release, including the name and gender of the accused.
The U.S. Department of Justice was set to hold a 3 p.m. news conference in Seattle alongside FBI and RCMP officials.
Killed mother and half-brother
On Feb. 10, Jesse Van Rootselaar, 18, shot and killed their mother Jennifer Strang and 11-year-old half-brother at the family home.
Van Rootselaar then went to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and gunned down five students and a teaching assistant.
The victims were identified as Abel Mwansa, Kylie Smith, Zoey Benoit, Ticaria Lampert, all 12, Ezekiel Schofield, 13, and Shannda Aviugana-Durand, 39.
Van Rootselaar, a former student at the school, then killed themself.
Maya Gebala , another student at the school hurt during the mass shooting, suffered serious injuries but survived and spent months recovering in hospital.

RCMP deputy commissioner Dwayne McDonald described Van Rootselaar as a trans woman who had dropped out of the school when they were 14 years old.
It was the worst mass shooting in Canada since the Nova Scotia attacks of April 2020 , when Gabriel Wortman killed 22 people over two days while also setting fires at 16 locations before being shot dead by RCMP officers.
