Purdy earned the playful moniker after being selected 262nd overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, making him the final player chosen that year. Since then, however, he has repeatedly shown that being the last pick does not mean being the least talented player.

Through four weeks of the 2026 season, Purdy sits atop the NFL leaderboard in passer rating among quarterbacks who have played at least three games. His 126.2 rating leads a group that includes some of the league’s biggest stars.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson ranks second with a 119.9 passer rating, while Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence sits third at 111.2.

Purdy has been remarkably efficient to begin the season. Through four games, he has completed 113 passes for 1,007 yards and 11 touchdowns. Even more impressively, he has yet to be sacked.

Every other quarterback who has started all four games this season has already been sacked at least five times. Purdy’s clean pocket has also placed him in some rare company.

According to the statistic, Purdy is the first quarterback since Peyton Manning with the 2005 Indianapolis Colts to start the first four games of a season without being sacked in any of them.

A tough test awaits in Seattle

Purdy and the undefeated 49ers, who enter Week 5 with a 4-0 record, will face their latest challenge when they travel to take on the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Seattle has started the season 3-1 and will have plenty of motivation to slow down a 49ers offense that has been led by Purdy’s impressive play. The last time these teams met, the Seahawks managed to sack Purdy three times, giving them a blueprint for putting pressure on the quarterback.

For now, though, Purdy continues to rewrite the story attached to his draft status. What began as a label for the final selection of the 2022 draft has become one of the most ironic nicknames in football, with “Mr. Irrelevant” looking anything but irrelevant at the top of the NFL’s quarterback rankings.
