Who will play for the Indiana Fever in 2027? Player-by-player contracts, salaries, WNBA free agents

· Yahoo Sports

INDIANAPOLIS — After a lackluster showing in the WNBA Playoffs with a first-round exit, the Indiana Fever now must look toward the 2027 season.

The Fever have seven players under contract for 2027, with approximately $4.5 million of their salary cap accounted for − not quite two-thirds. But field a team with enough depth that has a shot to win a championship, the Fever may need to rethink some of those contracts.

Here’s the state of every Fever player’s contract heading into 2027:

Indiana Fever hold rights to Caitlin Clark

Caitlin Clark, the Fever’s bonafide superstar, will be going into the final year of her rookie contract in 2027. Indiana picked up its 2027 team option ahead of the 2026 season.

Right now, Clark is slated to make $597,596 in 2027, but she is eligible to sign an EPIC (exceptional performance on initial contract) extension ahead of the final year of her rookie deal. The EPIC extension allows players to renegotiate their fourth-year rookie contract salary up to the standard max if they make an All-WNBA team or the supermax if they win WNBA MVP in their first three years in the league.

Clark is already eligible for an EPIC extension via her All-WNBA first team honor in her rookie season in 2024; she will likely pick up another first-team nod in 2026.

If Clark signs an EPIC extension, she can make up to the league max (17% of the salary cap) in 2027. The EPIC deal also comes with a stipulation to add three new years to the deal, which can all be up to the supermax (20% of the salary cap). Signing the EPIC would put Clark with the Fever at least through the 2030 season.

If Clark opts not to sign the EPIC extension, she will only make her $597,596 fourth-year rookie salary in 2027. The Fever would also still retain her rights through the 2029 season: she would be a restricted free agent in 2028, giving Indiana the right of first refusal in free agency, and then she would be eligible to be cored in 2029.

Aliyah Boston EPIC extension contract

Aliyah Boston, who earned an All-WNBA second-team honor in 2025, signed the EPIC extension ahead of the 2026 season. She is under contract with the Fever through 2029.

She made $1 million in 2026, taking a slight discount in order for the Fever to make other offseason moves, but will make the rolling supermax (20% of the salary cap) each season from 2027-29. The supermax in 2026 was $1.4 million, but it will rise the same percentage as the salary cap (between 3-10%) each season.

Kelsey Mitchell to become WNBA free agent

Kelsey Mitchell, who has played all nine years of her career in Indiana, will be an unrestricted free agent in 2027.

She has been cored the past two seasons, making the supermax ($250,000 in 2025 and $1.4 million in 2026) each year. She is no longer eligible to be cored, giving her the ability to be an unrestricted free agent and freely negotiate with any team in the league for the first time in her career.

The Fever front office has made it clear that they want to keep their big three of Mitchell, Clark, and Boston together, but that will get very expensive, very fast. Boston is already making 20% of the salary cap, the Fever have other large contracts on the books for 2027, Clark is due for a raise if she takes the EPIC deal, and Mitchell will likely command max-level offers from other teams.

To make the big three work financially in 2027, Clark or Mitchell (or both) may need to take some sort of hometown discount. The Fever may also need to offload some of their bigger, yet less effective, contracts.

Lexie Hull signed a two-year contract

Lexie Hull, who was the Fever’s No. 6 pick in 2022, signed a two-year protected deal with Indiana out of restricted free agency ahead of the 2026 season. She made $750,000 in 2026 and is slated to make $803,250 in 2027.

Her offensive output stalled, however, averaging just 5.2 points on 33.3% shooting this season, and while she has stayed in the starting lineup, her minutes have decreased heavily.

Monique Billings on a two-year contract

Monique Billings signed a two-year, $1.6 million protected deal with Indiana out of free agency ahead of the 2026 season, and the Fever expected her to take over the starting power forward spot after a career playing at the 5.

That position change didn’t go as anticipated for Billings or the Fever. She eventually fell out of the starting lineup in place of second-year forward Makayla Timpson in early August, and has been playing limited minutes as Boston’s backup.

Billings is slated to make $800,000 next season, but the Fever could try and find a trade partner to give her a fresh start in 2027.

Makayla Timpson still on rookie contract

Timpson, the Fever’s No. 20 draft pick in 2025, had a meteoric rise in her sophomore season while making just $277,500. She worked her way into the starting lineup and is averaging 5.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

She will be in the third year of her rookie contract in 2027 and is slated to make $305,250, unprotected. The Fever will also need to pick up her protected fourth-year contract option for 2028 ahead of the 2027 season.

Is Sophie Cunningham a free agent?

Sophie Cunningham was unhappy with her deal with the Fever heading into the 2026 season — she wanted a multi-year contract, but she only got a one-year, $665,000 deal. Now, she will be an unrestricted free agent heading into 2027.

She was a reliable role player throughout 2026, averaging 7.9 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. Cunningham ended the season playing more minutes than Hull at wing, but never cracked the starting lineup as White wanted her to be a spark off the bench.

Will Tyasha Harris return to Fever?

Tyasha Harris, a Fishers native, returned home with a one-year, $400,000 deal in Indiana. After recovering from a knee injury that limited her to just five games with Dallas last year, she became a vital part of Indiana’s backcourt rotation.

Harris will be an unrestricted free agent in 2027. She will also need to work through another injury setback, as she broke her left fibula in the Fever’s regular-season finale on Sept. 24. A broken fibula can take up to six months to recover from, according to AICA Orthopedics.

Indiana Fever rookie Raven Johnson's contract

Raven Johnson was the Fever’s first-round draft pick in 2026, and she had a limited role throughout her rookie season. She shined when needed, though, taking on a bigger role in the Fever’s short postseason run and showing how she could be a backup behind Clark and Mitchell.

She made $289,133 her rookie season in 2026 and will make $300,698, unprotected, in 2027.

Myisha Hines-Allen to be free agent

Myisha Hines-Allen will be an unrestricted free agent in 2027. She signed a one-year, $315,000 deal with the Fever for 2026.

Hines-Allen has been in and out of the rotation this season, but has stepped up when needed. She averaged 3.8 points and 3.3 rebounds this season.

Will Grace VanSlooten return to Indiana Fever?

The Fever picked up Grace VanSlooten on a minimum contract in May after the third-round draft pick out of Seattle was waived shortly after the season started. She has served in a pseudo-developmental role this season, getting minimal minutes only in garbage time.

Because she is not on a rookie-scale contract and has three or fewer years of service in the league, she will be a reserved free agent this season. That means the Fever can retain her on a minimum contract if they extend her a reserved qualifying offer.

Will Damiris Dantas return to Fever?

Damiris Dantas, who missed the final two months of the season because of a meniscus injury, signed a two-year deal with the Fever ahead of the 2026 season. She signed to be Boston’s backup, but saw minimal minutes before her injury.

As an 11-year league veteran, Dantas will make $300,000 in 2027, but it will only be a $277,500 cap hit for the Fever. Her deal is also unprotected, meaning the Fever could cut her contract without a buyout ahead of the season.

Mercedes Russell to be free agent

Mercedes Russell signed with the Fever in August after they were approved for a season-ending injury exception because of Dantas’ injury. She got some minutes here and there, but never truly cracked rotational time.

She will be an unrestricted free agent in 2027.

Can the Fever bring Bree Hall back?

Bree Hall was a developmental player — a new role created with the 2026 collective bargaining agreement — for the Fever this season. She was only eligible to be activated for 12 games, and ended up appearing in five, mostly for garbage time minutes.

The Fever will retain Hall’s rights, and she will be a reserved free agent in 2027. If the Fever extend her a reserved qualifying offer, they can sign her to a minimum contract.

Ugonne Michelle Onyiah contract after development year

Ugonne "Michelle" Onyiah, who the Fever signed in August, was their other development player. She only appeared in two games this season.

She will also be a reserved free agent this season, and the Fever can sign her to a minimum contract off a reserved qualifying offer.
