GVSU's Kellen Reed ties impressive Kircus record in win over Wayne State

ALLENDALE - Kellen Reed is putting up video-game type numbers.

The Grand Valley State University receiver caught five touchdown passes to tie the school record as the Lakers again put a beat-down on a second-straight opponent. GVSU won 69-3 over Wayne State University on Saturday, Oct. 3, to improve to 5-0.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Reed said. “It’s always fun in Lubbers (Stadium) getting in the end zone. We always have a great crowd here.”

There were 12,844 fans that showed up for the homecoming game.

GVSU, which had a bye week last Saturday, beat Judson 96-0 in its last game. So they have a combined score of 165 points in their last two games.

Reed’s five touchdowns ties David Kircus, who set the GVSU record in 2001. Had he ever heard of the Laker legend, who also played two seasons with the Detroit Lions?

“I’ve met him a couple of times,” Reed said. “I’ve been keeping my eye on some of those records.”

Reed, a senior from Holt, Mich., caught three touchdowns in the first quarter alone on Saturday. Amazingly, he did the exact same thing last game against Judson. He has 14 touchdowns this season and 26 for his career.

He finished with eight catches for 177 yards on Saturday.

“The talent’s always been there,” GVSU coach Scott Wooster said of Reed. “The thing that’s changed is the belief in himself and his coaches.”

Starting quarterback Andrew Schuster was 16-of-24 for 224 yards passing and four touchdowns. Kicker Mathew Bacik had field goals of 28 and 33 yards.

The fumble that wasn’t

Ryder Gravenhof rarely gets to touch the football.

The junior from Holland Christian High School is a 6-foot-4 defensive end.

But in the second quarter, he pounced on a Wayne State fumble. He was pretty excited and celebrated while holding up the ball.

The only problem is, the referees checked the replay and said that the Wayne State player was down before the ball popped out.

So technically, Gravenhof doesn’t get credit for the fumble recover.

Third-string QB has a big day

Zac Olejniczak doesn’t get much playing time. Going into the season, had been QB3. But when backup QB Brody Drogosh got hurt three weeks ago, that bumped Olejniczak into the backup role.

On Saturday, he threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Reed in the first quarter. It was the second-career touchdown pass for the sophomore from Lapeer, Mich. He threw one last game against Judson.

Early in the fourth quarter, Olejniczak parted the red sea and ran 60 yards to the 3-yard line where he ran out of bounds. One play later, he ran the ball in for the touchdown. It is his fifth-career rushing TD.

Playing time for Zeeland West grad

Trey Sloothaak is a familiar name for West Michigan sports fans. He’s a redshirt freshman defensive back for GVSU now. He got into his second-career game on Saturday late in the fourth quarter.

The Zeeland West High School grad was a quarterback in high school, where he won a state title his senior year with the Dux in 2024.

Sloothaak made a nice open-field tackle with 2 minutes remaining in the game and got to hear his name called over the PA. He finished with three solo tackles.

Defense has been lockdown

In five games this season, GVSU has only allowed four total touchdowns and just three total points in the past two games.

“It’s very fun,” said Keegan Sell, a GVSU linebacker. “Coach (Jim) Louis does a great job getting us ready and we come out ready to execute. A big thing that we’ve been working on is not letting up when backups get in or we’re up by a lot. Just keep it that way. Don’t let ‘em score late.”

Sell, a sophomore from Garretsville, Ohio, finished with five tackles.

GVSU is outscoring its opponents 55-7.
