Fernando Tatis Jr. hit the first pitch in the bottom of the first, 405 feet to center field, and Michael King carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning as San Diego rolled to an 8-0 win on Tuesday night. Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts also homered for the Padres in the rout while King ended up allowing one hit in seven scoreless innings, striking out eight.

Matthew Boyd lasted only four innings for the Cubs, surrendering four runs on five hits, and Nico Hoerner finished with two of Chicago’s three hits on the night. The Cubs had chances to get into the game, going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, but never broke through.

The Padres, who posted the second-best record in baseball after the All-Star break at 43-23, gave the ball to right-hander Nick Pivetta as they go for the sweep in Game 2. Pivetta, who missed most of the season with a flexor strain in his right elbow, put up a 2.86 ERA and 1.010 WHIP in 34.2 innings over eight starts, striking out 42. Right-hander Kevin Gausman made nine starts for Chicago after coming over from the Toronto Blue Jays at the trade deadline, working to a 4.83 ERA and 1.232 WHIP in 50.1 innings while striking out 57 batters.
