Mendoza scrambled backward nearly 30 yards while searching for a receiver before throwing the ball away. Officials immediately called intentional grounding, pushing the Yellow Jackets from third-and-13 to fourth-and-45.
The play effectively ended Georgia Tech’s comeback hopes, and fans wasted no time reacting online.
“Time to bench Alberto Mendoza,” one fan posted shortly after the game.
Another wrote, “Alberto Mendoza has to be one of the worst Division 1 QBs I’ve ever witnessed.”
Barstool personality Jack Mac wrote, “Alberto Mendoza just had one of the worst intentional groundings in football history. From 4th and 13 to 4th and 45.”
“Alberto Mendoza shouldn’t start another game for Georgia Tech,” one fan wrote.
While another added, “Huge yardage loss because Mendoza the Lesser doesn’t know when to throw the ball away.”
Another wrote, “No wonder Indiana was like we don’t need you.”
Brent Key Takes Accountability After the Loss
After the game, head coach Brent Key did not single out Mendoza; instead, he pointed the blame across the entire program.
“We have a bye week this week and a lot of things that have to take place,” Key said. “Things we have to adjust and change and fix.”
He emphasized accountability for everyone involved.
“Everyone has to look themselves in the mirror and be accountable for everything that we do,” Key said. “Players, coaches, staff, me – everyone has to be accountable.”
Key also acknowledged Georgia Tech’s injury issues.
“We also have to adjust things schematically when you have guys down. Can’t continue to do the same things, expect things differently. So injuries are part of the game. That’s part of the game.”
The loss dropped the Yellow Jackets to 1-3 and extended a troubling stretch for the program, which has now lost seven straight games against Power Conference opponents dating back to last season.
With a bye week before facing Duke, Georgia Tech has time to regroup. But after Saturday night’s collapse, many fans are already questioning whether Mendoza should still be leading the offense when the Yellow Jackets return to the game.
