Erasmus made 13 changes to his starting team, with only lock Eben Etzebeth and wing Ethan Hooker retaining their places in the run-on team from the side’s last 43-28 victory against the All Blacks in Baltimore.
It does present a huge opportunity for several players who will receive some much needed game-time and look to make an impression before the end-of-year tour.
“We are excited about the guys getting an opportunity after a tough four weeks against the All Blacks (in the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series), especially guys such as Canan Moodie and Handre Pollard, who were close to playing in one of the games and then got injured,” said assistant coach Mzwandile Stick.
“I’m also thrilled to see a guy like Herschel Jantjies. He’s probably only played about 25 minutes this season, but he’s been great in training sessions, so I’m very excited for him to get a chance.
“We always want to build squad depth. Obviously, the goal was slightly different when it came to the series against the All Blacks, because we treated it more like playoffs or a Rugby World Cup scenario.
“But this game against Australia gives us an opportunity to give other guys a chance to see what they’ve got. They have worked very hard to be where they are and they deserve the opportunity, so hopefully tomorrow can also be a good game.”
The match at the Optus Stadium kicks off at 11:45 (SA time) and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
