Kolkata: Film institute students injured after objecting to event by RSS-affiliated group

At least six students at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in Kolkata were injured on Sunday in an attack following their objections to a campus event organised by members of a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-affiliated organisation, Maktoob Media reported.

The RSS, a Hindutva organisation, is the ideological parent of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

The Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat, a consumer group, had rented the institute’s main theatre for an event scheduled for this afternoon, PTI reported.

According to the students’ union, they were not informed about the event before permission was granted.

Poorvi Bondre, a member of the union, told Deutsche Welle that students confronted the event participants after learning that the programme was affiliated with the RSS and was being used to “promote its agenda” on campus.

“They called us anti-nationals and Naxals and attacked us with knives,” Bondre said.

Some students were also chased while others had their clothes torn and phones forcibly taken, the union said in a statement.

The statement added that a large group had gathered outside the campus and was attempting to attack students inside.

Stones were thrown at students from outside the gate even while police were present, a student told Scroll.

Several persons were injured, including one who was hit on the head and another who was allegedly attacked with a knife, he added.
