Familiar Names Are Leaving IMSA, But There’s No Shortage of Teams Wanting In

A few familiar names may be missing from the IMSA grid next season, but finding cars to fill their spots apparently won’t be the problem.

Meyer Shank Racing, Pfaff Motorsports and DragonSpeed are among the teams not expected to return to the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2027. For Meyer Shank, the decision comes as Acura pauses its GTP program, leaving the team without the manufacturer partnership it wants to compete with at IMSA’s highest level.
On paper, losing established programs like those could make IMSA’s 2027 outlook seem a little concerning.
Then you see the number of teams trying to get in.
IMSA President John Doonan revealed at Indianapolis that nearly 80 cars have expressed interest in competing in the 2027 Rolex 24 at Daytona.
There’s just one problem: Daytona only has room for 61.
That doesn’t mean 80 cars are officially entered. The application and approval process is still underway, and IMSA isn’t expected to reveal the complete field until December. But it does mean there could be considerably more interest than available space.
We’re already starting to see what the next version of the grid could look like. Car Blanche has confirmed a full-season GTD PRO Aston Martin program, while Winward Racing will return with its Mercedes-AMG GT3.
