Weather forced NASCAR to scrap on-track activity Friday, and continued problems Saturday ultimately wiped out Cup Series qualifying, leaving the starting lineup to be determined without a traditional qualifying session.

That naturally raises a much bigger question for fans: Will Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway actually happen as scheduled?
For now, the latest forecast brings considerably better news.
Latest weather forecast for Sunday’s NASCAR race at Kansas
The NASCAR Cup Series is scheduled to race Sunday, Sept. 27, at Kansas Speedway, and the latest forecast suggests NASCAR should have a much better opportunity to get the race in.
The Weather Channel is calling for mostly cloudy skies with a high of 77 degrees, along with southeast winds between 5 and 10 mph.
More importantly, the hourly forecast currently shows only a relatively small chance of precipitation throughout the afternoon.
The rain chance sits at 8% at 1 p.m. local time, before moving to 14% at 2 p.m., 10% at 3 p.m. and 16% at both 4 and 5 p.m. It rises slightly to 21% at 6 p.m.
That is hardly a guarantee of a completely dry afternoon, particularly after the weather NASCAR has already dealt with this weekend. But as of Saturday, there is no significant rain threat showing up during the primary race window.
For a weekend in which NASCAR has spent plenty of time watching the radar, that is a welcome change.
Rain has already disrupted NASCAR’s Kansas weekend
Sunday’s forecast carries more weight because of everything that has already happened at Kansas.
Inclement weather forced the cancellation of ARCA Menards Series practice and qualifying Friday. NASCAR later canceled Craftsman Truck Series practice and qualifying after rain and track-drying efforts disrupted the schedule.
The weather problems carried into Saturday, with Cup Series qualifying also canceled.
That means NASCAR has already lost significant track time before the Cup field ever takes the green flag Sunday. But the current forecast offers reason for optimism that the weekend’s biggest event will avoid the same fate.
As always, conditions can change quickly, and NASCAR fans will want to keep an eye on the radar as race time approaches. For now, however, Sunday’s Cup race at Kansas Speedway looks to be in considerably better shape than much of the weekend that preceded it.
