Decatur rally falls short in loss at Arab

Sep. 26—ARAB — A late rally wasn't enough Friday night as Decatur fell to Arab on the Knights homecoming.
The Red Raiders fell in a 28-point hole early and couldn't dig themselves out, eventually falling 35-14.

"Arab's a good team, and they play hard. They had a really good game plan for us tonight," said Decatur head coach John Ritter.
It didn't take long for Arab to take control of the game. After a Decatur fumble on the first play of the game, the Knights capitalized by scoring two plays later. By the end of the first quarter, they led 21-0 and were averaging 17 yards per play.
"The defense forced some early turnovers and gave our offense some short fields. That really got us going," said Arab head coach Kyle Routon.
Ridge Tourney connected with DaNarrius Lampkin on an 18-yard score to cut the lead to 28-7 at halftime, and then Devin Haley scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter to make it 28-14. The Red Raiders had the ball fourth and one at their own 24 in the fourth quarter but opted for a punt; Arab scored three plays later to seal the win.
Arab quarterback Nicolas Stephens finished the game with 159 yards passing, 94 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Mason Ingram rushed for 106 yards and a score, while Tucker Willis caught four passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
Haley led Decatur with 106 yards rushing and a score. Lampkin caught four passes for 42 yards and a score. Deshaun Swopes and Latavion Sykes each had an interception.
Mistakes were costly for Decatur, as the Red Raiders finished with 252 yards of offense but had four turnovers, and they turned the ball over on downs twice inside the Arab 25 with penalties derailing each drive.
"We have to do a better job of protecting ourselves," Ritter said. "We got inside the 20 multiple times and had a bunch of penalties. We have to get that cleaned up because at times we look like a really good team, and other times we don't."
