Sean McVay sheds light on why Rams signed rookie safety from Eagles

On Wednesday, in light of recent injuries, the Los Angeles Rams made the decision to sign safety Maximus Pulley off the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad. After putting running back and special teamer Ronnie Rivers on injured reserve, the team wasted no time filling his roster spot.
Pulley, a 2026 undrafted rookie, played his last three collegiate seasons at Wofford, where he was a first-team FCS All-American, while being a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award for the FCS' best defensive player. After making his NFL debut last week with the Eagles as a practice squad call-up, he is now a member of the Rams' 53-man roster.

Head coach Sean McVay shared what went into the decision on Wednesday.
“[Rivers] got his calf in the game," said McVay. "It was just a freak deal where he was jumping up, and I think he got it when he was just jumping up to loosen himself up. It's a four-to-six week injury. I'm bummed out for Ronnie. We're just a little bit lighter on the back end so we figured, let's bring him [Pulley] in. He's a guy that we had some like for from his college tape. We'll welcome him with open arms and go from there.”
Starting safety Kam Kinchens missed practice on Thursday as the team prepares for a Sunday night matchup against the Denver Broncos. For Rivers, the team plans to call up either Dean Connors or Jordan Waters to fill the RB3 position for the game.
In his debut, Pulley, 24, played no defensive snaps, but contributed on six special teams plays.
