Colorado State issues apology to BYU for derogatory chants during Cougars win over Rams

Add Colorado State and Fort Collins to the list of schools and cities who've hurled derogatory chants at BYU.
The Rams fans were chanting “F--- the Mormons” toward the BYU Cougars football team throughout Saturday's game at Canvas Stadium. Before the night ended, CSU issued an apology for the actions of the fans toward BYU and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The school said that "mocking anyone's faith has no place at CSU." BYU is the flagship school tied to the Mormon church.
"It runs counter to our community's values and to who we are. BYU's players, coaches and fans deserved better," Colorado State officials said in a statement issued late in the game. The 11th-ranked Cougars beat the Rams 41-23.
This isn't the first time this has happened in the state of Colorado with BYU. Last season, the University of Colorado was issued a $50,000 fine for expletives and religious slurs directed at Mormons when BYU beat the Buffaloes at Folsom Field.
Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark condemned the chants at the time in a statement announcing the fine. Elsewhere in the Big 12 last season, Cincinnati apologized and Oklahoma State was fined for similar chants directed at BYU.
As for the game itself, Cougars running back LJ Martin ran for 176 yards and three touchdowns, including a 56-yard run on the second play of the game, moving BYU to 3-0 for a fourth straight season. The reigning Big 12 offensive player of the year is only the second play in BYU history with three touchdowns in a quarter.
Colorado State came into the Week 3 matchup with history not on their side. They've now lost 25 straight games to AP Top 25 opponents. The last win was against No. 7 Colorado in the 2022 edition of the Rocky Mountain Showdown at Mile High Stadium in Denver. The last time a ranked BYU team was upset by CSU came in 1994 in Provo. Not to add insult to injury, but the Rams haven't defeated a ranked opponent at home since 1990.
BYU moves on to play TCU in Fort Worth, Texas on Oct. 3. The bye week will give Kalani Sitake and his team an extra week to prepare for Big 12 play, along with the important matchup with Notre Dame looming on Oct. 17. Both the Cougars and the Irish are expected to be undefeated when they meet on gridiron.
