LSU football traveled to Oxford, Mississippi in Week 3 to take on coach Lane Kiffin’s former team Ole Miss football, whose fans began raining down boos on their departed coach. Kiffin and his former assistant Pete Golding greeted each other before the game, which quickly turned personal as Ole Miss jumped out to a 24-7 halftime lead.

Prior to the Rebels’ final touchdown of the half, former NFL star Dez Bryant sent a warning on his X page that was read by thousands and encapsulated what many were feeling.

“Ole Miss is taking everything personally! LSU better wake up…or this game is going to get ugly,” he wrote.

The Rebels were emboldened before the game with a prediction in their favor from acting legend Morgan Freeman, adding fuel to the fire as they sought to defeat their former head coach, who left for a big contract in Baton Rouge, Louisiana this offseason.

Ole Miss had 289 total yards at halftime, more than double LSU football’s 117-yard total. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss led the way for Ole Miss with 21-of-27 completions while LSU QB Sam Leavitt struggled after an injury-plagued week and had 51 passing yards at halftime along with 23 rushing yards on eight attempts.

Leavitt’s gutty effort sent the right message to his teammates before halftime, but Chambliss and the Rebels looked like they were about to run away with a big home win. Bryant’s warning did nothing to stem the tide as he watched from afar, but the Tigers still had two quarters of opportunities ahead of them as the night continued to progress.
