Marvins Antoine, an 18-year-old college freshman running back at UMass Dartmouth, was fatally stabbed early Saturday in Providence, Rhode Island.

The incident happened around 12:30 a.m. in a Wendy’s parking lot on Charles Street following an altercation at nearby Mezza Lounge. Providence police reportedly said Antoine suffered stab wounds to his chest and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A second UMass Dartmouth football player, 19-year-old Kensley Macean, also suffered stab wounds. Macean sustained injuries to his head and neck, but police said they were not life-threatening.
Police said both players had been at Mezza Lounge with other members of the football team. Investigators are working to determine what led to the confrontation and subsequent stabbing.

“We are heartbroken to share that first-year student and football team member Marvins Antoine passed away this morning following an incident in Providence, Rhode Island,” the university said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Marvins’ family, friends, classmates, and teammates.”
Antoine was from Boston and attended B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts. He had recently started his college career and had yet to appear in a game for UMass Dartmouth.
His death now leaves the Corsairs dealing with a loss that extends far beyond football. The program will also support Macean while police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
For a young player beginning his college career, Antoine’s death has brought an abrupt and devastating end to his time with the program.
