The New York Jets began the 2026 season with a win over the Tennessee Titans. Geno Smith and the offense looked good, and the defense also showed up and performed well.

Rookies David Bailey and Kenyon Sadiq also made their marks, recording their first sack and touchdown, respectively. But what about their other first-round rookie, Omar Cooper Jr.? Well, he made one nice play, but got some bad news.

Cooper is dealing with an ankle sprain and was already ruled out for Week 2. But now, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Jets rookie wide receiver has been placed on injured reserve, meaning he'll miss the next four weeks at minimum.

Jets place Omar Cooper Jr. on IR due to ankle injury

"Jets rookie WR Omar Cooper Jr. is going to be placed on Injured Reserve, sources say, giving him four weeks to recover from his ankle sprain," Rapoport reports. "He'll be designated to return and should be back shortly."

This is some unfortunate news, as Cooper is now confirmed to be out for the next four weeks. Before landing on IR, there was a chance he could be back in the next few weeks.

Now, Cooper will miss Weeks 2 through 5 as he recovers from this ankle sprain. The only good piece of news is that this doesn't seem likely to be a lengthy stay on the IL, as Cooper should be back relatively soon.

He made one catch in his NFL debut for 30 yards, and landed on IR less than a week later. Garrett Wilson and Adonai Mitchell will lead the WR room, with Isiah Williams and Arian Smith rounding out the WR depth chart for the Jets going forward.

Cooper will miss matchups against the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, and Cleveland Browns. His first chance to come back will be Week 6 against the New England Patriots in Foxborough.

The first time he'll have a chance to play in front of a home crowd will be the following week against the Miami Dolphins. With this injury seemingly not being a long-term issue, Cooper should be back somewhat soon, so Week 6 or 7 is in play for the rookie WR.
