People have been prematurely slapping labels on Kirk Cousins since he entered the league in 2012. The then-Washington Redskins drafted the Michigan State graduate to be an insurance policy for Robert Griffin III, raising eyebrows when they grabbed him in the fourth round. Cousins later got the reputation of being a big-game underachiever after falling short during prime-time matchups and in the playoffs. Now, he is a place-holder for the Las Vegas Raiders until Fernando Mendoza is ready to succeed him.

All of these labels are rooted in truth, but they threaten to undervalue everything the veteran quarterback has accomplished over the last decade and a half. Cousins just reached a terrific milestone during last Sunday’s 27-13 win versus the Miami Dolphins, exceeding 300 career passing touchdowns and jumping John Elway for 14th on the all-time list. The 38-year-old’s response to the feat is exactly what one should expect from the man they call Kirko Chains.

“Just passed John Elway, I think,” Cousins told Raiders director of communications and public relations Will Kiss, per “Inside the NFL.” “It’s a decent name. He had a decent career.”

The four-time Pro Bowl selection understands what it means to leap past the Denver Broncos legend in any category. This backup-turned-reliable starter continues to defy expectations, a celebrated skill that is taking him to some impressive heights. After tearing his Achilles in 2023, he is just trying to savor every ounce of football he has left. The Las Vegas Raiders are more than happy to accommodate him, on what could be the final stretch of his NFL journey.

Kirk Cousins completed 21-of-30 passes for 160 yards while throwing three touchdowns and two interceptions against the Dolphins. He is well removed from his prime, but the former Washington, Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons signal-caller can still make an impact under the right circumstances.

While Cousins may wind up being a backup before season’s end, he has already proven that no label can properly define him. Just appreciate the time he has left under center.
