Patriots Cornerbacks Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis III Set to Match Up With DK Metcalf in Week 2

We'll most likely see physical dominance and lockdown boundary coverage in the secondary during the Week 2 matchup between the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

There will be a lot of games within the game on Sunday, and one of them is a marquee matchup between Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf and Patriots' newly extended cornerback Christian Gonzalez.

The two missed a meeting last season in Week 3, when Gonzalez was out with a hamstring strain. The last time the pair went toe-to-toe was when Metcalf was a Seahawk in 2024. Gonzalez kept the then-Seattle wideout under wraps until a coverage miscommunication led to a Seahawks score.

Now the two meet again, and here’s what to watch out for when they’re both across from one another at the line of scrimmage.

Metcalf is a Challenge to Guard in Zone Coverage

As mentioned above, Metcalf can burn you if something goes wrong on the field. His physical prowess can also overpower you if you're in zone coverage. Metcalf is one of the bigger wideouts in the game at 6'4" and 235 pounds. Historically, the Steelers star WR has been lethal at exploiting defenders when playing zone.

If Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers offense use pre-snap motion or play-action to throw New England’s defensive backs for a loop, Metcalf can easily find open space. These are areas of pass defending that the Patriots struggled with against the Seahawks in Week 1.

A dangerous moment for Gonzalez would be if the Steelers get into the red zone; Metcalf's catch radius is an absolute nightmare to defend the closer you get to the end zone. The newly extended cornerback would need to play a perfect game Sunday to stop him on that side of the field.

Gonzalez Can Limit Metcalf in Man Coverage

Metcalf had a poor stat line in Week 1, though. He was targeted 10 times and only wracked up 40 yards. If the Patriots stick Gonzalez in man coverage on the Steelers' star wideout, they could keep his pass yardage to a minimum.

If Gonzalez keeps Metcalf in man coverage, it will force Rodgers to make more short-yardage throws to players like Michael Pittman and Pat Freiermuth.

This could move the chains, but on the road in the Patriots' home opener, it could eventually get stale and leave a fairly respectable offense one-dimensional without a deep threat downfield.

Let's Not Forget About Carlton Davis III

Having a highly capable CB2 is key in a situation like this, and Carlton Davis III is that man. Davis is the polar opposite of Gonzalez. He brings a rawer play style to his technique, which could, if needed, give Metcalf problems in man coverage.

The Patriots could experiment with taking Gonzalez off Metcalf and sticking Davis on him. Gonzalez is very fluid in shadowing top receivers, but Davis is known as a heavy, aggressive boundary corner with no issue jamming receivers at the line of scrimmage to gain an early advantage.

Davis will most likely hold his own against other receivers on the field, but don't be surprised if the two opposing players cross paths if the situation calls for it.
