Jindal Steel creates history with world's longest steel slag road, enters Guinness World Records

Jindal Steel has created a new milestone in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, by joining hands with Indian scientists to construct the world’s longest steel slag road. The company has built a 1.85-kilometre-long, four-lane road using 100% steel slag generated as waste from its factories. Made entirely from processed steel slag, the road has been recognised by Guinness World Records as the longest of its kind in the world.

Realising the vision of ‘Waste to Wealth’, nearly 2 lakh tonnes of processed steel slag have been used in the construction of the road. The initiative reduces dependence on the excavation and mining of natural stone. Built to withstand the movement of heavy commercial vehicles such as trucks, the road is designed to offer significant savings in both resources and costs. Compared with conventional roads, it is around 35% thinner and has resulted in approximately 40% savings in construction costs.

Jindal Steel worked with CSIR and the road research institute to scientifically process the steel slag through crushing, metal extraction and grading, converting it into aggregates suitable for road construction. The processed material has been used from the bottom layer of the road to the upper bitumen layer. The road was approved only after undergoing stringent environmental tests.

Jindal Steel Chairman Naveen Jindal said on the occasion that India’s progress should be driven by innovative experiments that protect the environment while benefiting the country. He said the technology demonstrates how industrial waste can be transformed into an instrument of nation-building.

Dr. Jitendra Singh (Minister of Science and Technology) said the project fulfils the vision of ‘Waste to Wealth’. He said it demonstrates that indigenous technology can provide solutions to major challenges facing the country.

Jindal Steel has named the processed slag ‘Steel Grit’, and its logo was unveiled on the occasion. An agreement has also been signed to promote the use of this technology in the construction of roads across the country.
