Two arrested at protest outside Carney’s Investment Summit dinner; one collared in west end distraction theft

Two Toronto women are facing charges following a protest outside the Art Gallery of Ontario on Monday night, while attendees of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Investment Summit gathered inside for a private dinner.

A small group of protesters “deliberately blocked the road, impeding police officers and police vehicles” in the McCaul St.-Dundas St. W. area, Toronto Police said in a press release.
“One individual was arrested after ignoring repeated directions to clear the roadway,” police said.
A second person allegedly assaulted an officer and allegedly attempted to interfere with the arrests.
Shelly Agius, 44, was arrested and charged with mischief by interfering with the lawful enjoyment of property, and obstructing a peace officer.
Lily Phan, 49, was arrested and charged with obstructing a peace officer and assaulting a peace officer.
Elderly man targeted in Toronto distraction theft: Police
Toronto Police have arrested a man who allegedly targeted an elderly man sitting on his porch in a distraction theft, with cops still looking for a female suspect.
Police said the incident happened on Aug. 30 at around 1:20 p.m. in the Rockcliffe Blvd. and Alliance Ave. area., where a man in a white Chevrolet with a woman in the rear passenger seat drove past the victim’s home.
“The female passenger lured the elderly victim off the porch to the vehicle and stole his jewelry, while replacing it with fake jewelry,” police said in a press release.
Cops said both suspects then fled the area with the victim uninjured.
Roberto Carlos Ghiocel, 22, of Toronto, was arrested on Sept. 11, and charged with robbery and participating in or contributing to a criminal organization.
Police said investigators seized a quantity of fake jewelry after searching an address and a vehicle.
Cops do not have a description of the female suspect.
Police have released a photo of the accused man and the items seized as they believe there may be more victims.

Man charged in Oshawa bank robbery
A man who allegedly robbed a bank in downtown Oshawa on Monday morning is facing charges.
Durham Regional Police said officers responded to a robbery call at a CIBC branch at 2 Simcoe St. S., where a man approached an employee and allegedly claimed he had a firearm while demanding cash.
Police said the female employee complied and handed over Canadian currency estimated to be around $4,000.
Cops said the man fled the area, but he was later located by officers and arrested without incident.
Darren Lazaruik, 56, of no fixed address, has been charged with robbery, failure to comply with a probation order, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
