After watching their 2025 NFL season get derailed by injuries – in addition to the play-calling faux pas of Kevin Patullo – the Philadelphia Eagles find themselves relatively unscathed heading into Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season.

Now granted, that can change in a hurry, as the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots quickly learned in their Wednesday night Super Bowl rematch, but with their final injury report submitted before Week 1, only two players appear: star free agent edge rusher Jonathan Greenard, who is officially out, and rookie tight end Eli Stowers, who is questionable to make his NFL debut against the Washington Commanders.

While Greenard won’t be on the field in Week 1 alongside Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt, Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis and company, it sounds like his absence won’t be an extended one, as he said he was “close” heading into Week 1.

“That’s not for me to decide. I feel good, though,” Greenard said on Thursday. “I will say I feel I’m in a good spot, just to know that. I know that I’m working every day to continue to try to get this thing stronger. We’re close, I know that.”

Stowers commented on his availability too, noting that he’s returned to practice after a minor injury against the Patriots during the preseason and “believes” he will play in the season opener.

“I believe so, that’s the plan, so I’m excited,” Stowers said. “I’m super excited, just to get back onto the field and be able to play in the first real regular season game. It’s a blessing, so I’m excited for it.”

On the Commanders’ sideline, Dan Quinn’s squad hasn’t been nearly as lucky on the injury front, with K’Lavon Chaisson, Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Odafe Oweh, and Daron Payne all limited at practice on Thursday and thus questionable to play in Week 1.

The Eagles have the ammunition to overcome their Week 1 injuries

To say Jonathan Greenard is one of the Eagles’ biggest X-Factors of the 2026 NFL season would be an understatement.

After getting good but not elite production out of their defensive end rotation in 2025, Howie Roseman decided to add a serious weapon off the edge to Vic Fangio’s unit, replacing a departing Jaelan Phillips and a retiring Brandon Graham with the former Minnesota Vikings edge rusher for a pair of third-round picks. While Greenard wasn’t as effective in 2025 as he was in 2023 and 2024, he remains a savvy, veteran pass rusher who can feast one-on-one while interior forces of nature like Carter and Davis impose their gravity over the center.

Would it have been nice to see Greenard make his debut in midnight green on Sunday? Most definitely, but down their star edge, the Eagles still have their 2026 starters, Smith and Hunt, plus offseason additions Arnold Ebiketie and AJ Epenesa, who ended up in Philly after being signed-then-waived by the Cleveland Browns with a mystery injury.

And as for Stowers? Well, considering the Eagles kept four tight ends on their 53-man roster, there’s no guarantee he will even be active in Game 1 if he is fully healthy, with Dallas Goedert likely to start, UDFA wide receiver-turned-TE EJ Jenkins earning major props for his receiving abilities after the 53-man roster was announced, and free agent addition Johnny Mundt expected to play a key role as a blocker in Sean Mannion’s offense.

Like Greenard, expectations for Stowers were at an all-time high after Roseman gave up Day 2 ammunition to bring him to town during the 2026 NFL Draft, but he also failed to flash in a way fans expected, struggling to stand out during training camp before suffering a hamstring injury against the Patriots. While it would be foolish to write off Stowers just yet, as he is the reigning John Mackey Award winner for the best tight end in college football – beating out Kenyon Siddiq for the honor – it’s possible Philadelphia could keep him in street clothes early on until they feel confident in his ability to block, chip, and separate against NFL defenders.

For some teams, losing a Day 2 offensive weapon and a $98 million edge rusher would be a certified blow heading into a Week 1 division battle with potential playoff consequences in a top-heavy NFC, but it’s really a testament to Roseman’s long-term team-building philosophy that the Eagles should be able to weather the storm without much issue. Assuming they leave Week 1 at full strength, Philadelphia should be able to ride some early momentum into Week 3 when their schedule gets increasingly challenging with showdowns against the Chicago Bears and the Los Angeles Rams.
