Mandatory Credit: Ken Blaze-Imagn ImagesHeading into this week’s season opener, there are a lot of questions surrounding the Browns. How will Deshaun Watson play? Will the new-look defense without Myles Garrett be anything close to what it has been in recent years?
Defensively, the trade of Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams shook up the NFL landscape during the offseason. Garrett was fresh off of breaking the NFL single-season sack record last season in Cleveland. In exchange, the Browns acquired young pass rusher Jared Verse and draft capital.
Ahead of this week’s game against the Jaguars, Verse spoke out with a clear warning to Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Jared Verse Sends Warning to Trevor Lawrence Before Browns-Jaguars
As shared by Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, Verse and the Cleveland defense is ready to get after Lawrence this week.
“Trevor Lawrence is a great player,” Verse said. “He can go back there and he can dot you up all day, but he can also run the ball around you if you give him those gaps of the seams. And we’re just going to rush and get after him. We’re not going to rush scared because you can’t do that with anybody.”
Verse continued on, sharing more about how the team plans to attack the Jaguars’ passing game.
“If you rush scared, he’s just going to be back there dotting you up the whole time. We’re going to get after him. We’re going to get to him. We’re going to hit him. We’re going to try to sack him a couple times, hopefully a lot more than a couple, but we’re just going to do what we have to do to get that win.”
Last season with the Rams, Verse put up great numbers. He played in all 17 regular season games, racking up 58 total tackles to go along with 7.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and a defended pass.
At 25 years old, Verse is going to be along-term cornerstone piece for the Cleveland defense. He may not end up being the same level of player as Garrett was for the Browns, but he’s more than capable of getting to the quarterback.
That being said, Cleveland is scheduled to kick things off against Jacksonville at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon. Fans will be able to tune in to watch the game on CBS.
