Jessica Pegula Praises Aryna Sabalenka’s ‘Insanely High’ Level After US Open Clash
The blockbuster semifinal clash unfolded in a closely contested fashion, with Sabalenka eventually gaining the upper hand in the opening set by securing the first break of the match at 6-5. She then dominated the second set to claim a 7-5, 6-2 victory over the American, advancing to her fourth consecutive US Open final.
During her post-match press conference, Pegula joked that someone must have angered the four-time Grand Slam champion, as Sabalenka produced one of her best performances of the season. She praised the Belarusian’s “insane” level of play and admitted there was little she could have done to counter it.
“I think that’s definitely, you can ask her, probably the best match she’s played this year. I thought her level was insanely high. Maybe she felt a little bit off at the beginning, but I felt like we were both playing well, serving well,” Pegula said.
“I don’t know who pissed her off today, but hopefully it wasn’t me totally, but might have been. I don’t know. She played insane. She played super high level. Honestly, I don’t really know if there was much I could do today,” she added.
Pegula also revealed that she was not too upset about the loss, since Sabalenka’s stellar display was simply too powerful. The American even shed light on a hilarious conversation she and her team had with Sabalenka’s camp.
“I mean, I’m honestly not that upset. I don’t really think there was much I could have done today,” she said. “We joked with her team, we’re like, ‘Do you like us? We’re good people. Like we’re pretty nice to you guys. Do you think that maybe one day she could be maybe off a little bit so I could just get a chance?'”
“That was pretty much our attitude after the match because like I said, she played an insanely high level. I think probably one of her better matches this year for sure. Of course, I tried to stick around to see if the level would go off, but it seemed like it just got better as the match went on,” she added.
Following her win over Jessica Pegula, Aryna Sabalenka is set to lock horns with Elena Rybakina in the US Open final. The highly anticipated encounter will be a rematch of this year’s Australian Open final, where Rybakina claimed a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
