DWU football gameday: Tigers take on road contest at Waldorf

Sep. 11—MITCHELL — Dakota Wesleyan University football will be back in action under the lights on Saturday night as they travel east to play Waldorf University.
The Tigers take the field at 1-1 after a complete effort against Doane on Sept. 5. On Saturday, they take on a lowly Warriors squad that is in its third year in the Great Plains Athletic Conference but still looking for its first league win. With contributions from offense, defense and special teams, DWU is seeking its first 2-0 start in conference play in 11 years.

Notes: A DWU win would give the Tigers their first 2-1 or better start to a season since 2023, when DWU started the year at 5-1. ... DWU last started 2-0 against its GPAC schedule in 2015, defeating Briar Cliff and Midland in road games and winning its first three league games. ... In two meetings in 2024 and 2025, DWU has averaged 29 first downs and 38 points per game against Waldorf.
About DWU: DWU has put together back-to-back 100-plus-yard rushing games, matching their total from 2025. ... The Tigers are averaging 375.5 yards per game to start the season, the best offensive yardage figure in their opening two games since 2019. ... DWU's red-zone touchdown success continued last week against Doane, going 3-for-3 for the game and improving to 6-for-6 on the season. The Tigers were 12-for-24 in picking up touchdowns on red-zone drives in 2025. ... Dating back to the start of the 2025 season, DWU has had at least one takeaway on defense in 11 of the last 13 games, including five takeaways to start the 2026 campaign. ... Mount Vernon product Reed Rus leads the GPAC in sacks with four and is tied for the league lead in tackles for loss with four. ... DWU leads the GPAC with four interceptions on defense, with one each from Jackson Jarding, Trevor Sladky, Mikey Hart and Rayshawn Johnson.
About the Warriors: This is Waldorf's home opener. ... Luke Beyer is among the conference leaders in tackles, with 19 total stops through two games. ... Waldorf has allowed 73 points per game defensively in the first two games of the season. That's second-most in the NAIA among teams to play twice this season, only topped by Bethany (Kan.) at 80.5 ppg allowed. ... The Warriors have yet to win a GPAC game in its three-year league tenure, losing 22 games in a row. They last defeated a GPAC team on Aug. 26, 2023 when they topped Briar Cliff 35-20 as a member of the defunct North Star Athletic Association.
