Donald Trump vows to ban Canadian companies from U.S. government contracts

The only thing the leaders of Canada and the United States seem to be trading anymore are nasty social media messages .

On Labour Day, it was Bombardier products potentially being banned from the U.S. by Trump. Then on Tuesday, the first day Prime Minister Mark Carney’s latest reciprocal tariffs were in effect, Canadian companies that supply the U.S. government were threatened.

“I am hereby directing the GSA (Government Services Administration), working with the USTR (United States Trade Representative), to take all necessary steps to remove Canadian-origin products from GSA’s Multiple Award Schedules unless Canada restores full and fair reciprocity for American Farmers and Companies,” Trump said in a social media post. “Those schedules account for more than 50 billion dollars a year.”

Essentially, the president said Canada will be cut out of the loop unless they open the market to American farmers.

‘Ripping us off for years’

At this point, talks between the two countries have broken off.

“Everyone knows that Canada doesn’t let our Great Dairy Farmers sell into the Canadian Market, and that the only reason Canada makes autos is because of previous disastrous Trade Agreements while other Presidents were in office,” the president said in his post.

Trump also contended that “Canada has been ripping us off for years, but what many do not realize is that the Canadian Government, including Canadian Provinces, have banned American Small Businesses and Companies from selling into their Government Procurement Markets. This is the case even though Canada gets broad access into the massive American Government Procurement Market, including those of our States. That is not reciprocity, it is a Canadian Trade Scam. From now on, NO RECIPROCITY – NO ACCESS!”

However, the news came hours after Carney posted a video his X and YouTube accounts, in which he oddly referenced William McKinley, who was U.S. president from 1897 until his assassination in 1901, for his attempts to take over Canada through tariffs.

Carney fighting back

So as Trump vows to cancel Canadian products having access to the American government, Carney boasts he’s doing a “pivot” to the European Union and China.

“This isn’t the first time Americans have tried to use tariffs to break us,” said Carney. “Before becoming president, William McKinley, was an Ohio congressman known as the Napoleon of protection. He championed the Tariff Act of 1890 that put 50% tariffs on our imports to the United States. Does that sound familiar?”

Carney added the McKinley tariff was “meant to pressure us into dependence and eventually annexation by the United States. In reality, it did the opposite. Rather than getting weaker, Canada grew stronger.”

Time will tell how things will work out in the current U.S.-Canada trade war .

But one thing that is unusual is unlike other world leaders, Carney is engaged in his battle with Trump by using social media, declaring there is a rupture and the previous arrangement between the two counties is over.

What does not seem to be over in this trade war is the trading of new shots being taken by the leaders on social media.
