Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway day to day after ankle injury in season opener

WACO, Texas (FOX 44) -- Baylor’s season opener ended with a one-point loss to Auburn, but the biggest question coming out of the game is the health of quarterback DJ Lagway.
The Florida transfer played through an apparent right ankle injury Saturday as the Bears fell to Auburn 17-16. Lagway is now considered day to day as Baylor prepares for its next game this Saturday.

Baylor coach Dave Aranda said Monday that Lagway would participate in the team’s walkthrough and that his status would be evaluated throughout the week.
“We have walk through today. DJ will participate,” Aranda said. “Right now, DJ is a day-to-day guy. If we get from day to day through day this week, we want to play him.”
Lagway suffered a hard hit to his right ankle in the first half and later had to be carried into the locker room by teammates. He returned to the field with his ankle taped and continued playing.
In his Baylor debut, Lagway threw for 199 yards and a touchdown and nearly helped the Bears complete a comeback.
Baylor had a chance to take the lead late in the game, but its two-point conversion attempt came up short, allowing Auburn to escape with the victory.
While Lagway’s health remains a major concern, Baylor also has areas to address offensively.
The Bears struggled to sustain drives and had difficulty establishing the running game, particularly in the first half. Aranda said the ground game improved after halftime but remains an area where Baylor needs to make progress.
“I thought we improved in the third and fourth quarter,” Aranda said. “So I think that’s an area that we can continue to get better at.”
Aranda said a more consistent running game could help Baylor sustain drives, create explosive plays and take some pressure off Lagway.
“For us to sustain the drives and eventually score on our drives by running the football, I’d like to see that,” Aranda said.
Baylor will continue to monitor Lagway throughout the week before determining whether he will be available Saturday.
