WHEN DID THE BETWAY PREMIERSHIP TRANSFER WINDOW OPEN?
The first registration window for the 2026/27 season opened on 1 July 2026. This allowed Betway Premiership clubs to register new signings and reshape their squads ahead of the new campaign.
The window also remains active during the opening weeks of the season.
According to Premier Soccer League, clubs have until 22 September 2026 to complete their permanent transfers, loan deals and player registrations.
That means there is still time for clubs to make late moves.
WHEN DOES THE MID-SEASON TRANSFER WINDOW OPEN?
The second transfer window opens on 1 January. It runs into February.
This gives clubs another opportunity to strengthen their squads during the second half of the season. Teams can use the window to replace injured players, improve squad depth or add quality for the title race.
HOW ARE SALARIES AND CONTRACTS STRUCTURED IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN BETWAY PREMIERSHIP?
There is no league-wide salary cap controlling what players can earn. Contracts are negotiated between the player, club and representative.
As a result, salaries can vary significantly. Established stars, senior internationals and Bafana Bafana players can command much higher salaries.
Some top earners can reportedly make up to R1 million per month, particularly when image rights and commercial agreements are included.
Younger players generally earn less.
At smaller clubs, some players can earn around R12 000 per month, while salaries of R20 000 to R30 000 are possible for younger players at bigger clubs.
WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST TRANSFER FEES IN PSL HISTORY?
Some of the biggest transfers involving South African clubs include:
- Percy Tau – R64 million from Mamelodi Sundowns to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2018
- Relebohile Mofokeng – R56 million from Orlando Pirates to Royale Union Saint-Gilliose in 2026
- Mbekezile Mbokazi – R52 million from Orlando Pirates to Chicago Fire FC in 2025.
- Thulani Serero – R50 million from Ajax Cape Town to AFC Ajax in 2011.
- Mbulelo Mabizela – R46 million from Orlando Pirates to Tottenham Hotspur in 2003.
These figures show just how valuable South African talent can become on the international market.
HOW DO PRE-CONTRACT DEALS WORK?
A pre-contract allows a club to secure a player before his current contract expires. The player negotiates directly with the interested club.
He then signs an agreement confirming that he will join once his existing contract ends. The major difference is simple.
No transfer fee is paid to the player’s current club.
HOW DO FREE-AGENT SIGNINGS WORK?
A free transfer happens when a player becomes available without a transfer fee. This usually happens after his contract expires.
The new club negotiates directly with the player and his representatives. There is no need to agree on a transfer fee with the player’s former club.
A player can also become a free agent if his contract is terminated by mutual agreement. That can open the door for an immediate move.
With the 22 September deadline approaching, expect more activity from Betway Premiership clubs before the window finally closes.
