Starting pitcher performanceCHICAGO — Bailey Ober worked around traffic for much of his start, but was still able to keep the White Sox relatively quiet.
It wasn’t until his final inning, the fifth, when the White Sox struck for a run against Ober, who gave up a leadoff double to Sam Antonacci and a run-scoring single to Munetaka Murakami. Ober was removed after that, throwing 4 1/3 innings and giving up the one run on four hits while striking out six in his outing.
Key momentAn inning later, the White Sox broke through against the Twins’ bullpen, tallying three runs in the sixth.
Kody Funderburk allowed a leadoff double before being replaced by Andrew Morris, who promptly walked the first batter he faced.
After getting one out, with the infield drawn in, Antonacci hit a ground ball towards Kody Clemens, which defected off his glove and into the outfield. Two runs scored on the play, putting the White Sox up by three at the time. One more run scored in the inning before Morris was able to extract himself from the jam.
The White Sox continued to tack on against the Twins’ bullpen adding five runs in the eighth inning to turn the game into a complete blowout. Twins pitchers issued 10 walks in the loss.
Twins on offenseThe Twins finished the day with four hits, quieted by a collection of bullpen arms.
Hagen Smith, Chicago’s top pitching prospect, entered in the top of the fourth inning and threw three perfect innings in the middle of the game, striking out four. The Twins scored their lone run of the game in the seventh inning when Brooks Lee hit his 23rd home run of the season.
Up nextThe Twins have not announced a starter for Monday’s game in Detroit, but it is likely to be Joe Ryan (6-8, 3.65 ERA), who would be returning from the injured list (glute strain) and pitching in his first major league game in more than a month. The Tigers will counter with Troy Melton (7-4, 2.20 ERA) in a game set for 2:10 p.m.
