Quarterback Drew Mestemaker will lead Oklahoma State for the first time when it visits Tulsa in an in-state matchup. Last season, Mestemaker got the attention of many people throughout the country. He led the North Texas offense, which led the nation in scoring by averaging 45.1 points per game, to a 12-2 record. He was named the American Conference Offensive Player of the Year and led the nation in passing yards. As a redshirt sophomore, he’s looking to turn things around at Oklahoma State. That’s something desperately needed after a 1-11 season and 0-9 conference record.
Oklahoma State and Tulsa are separated by just 70 miles on the Cimarron Turnpike, making the rivalry known as the Turnpike Classic. Oklahoma State leads the all-time series 44-28 with five ties, although Tulsa got a 19-12 win in Stillwater last year. That snapped a 10-game Cowboys winning streak.
The win against the Cowboys was one of four wins for Tulsa last year. The team finished 4-8 and 1-7 in the conference. The program continues to rebuild under second-year head coach Tre Lamb. Tulsa has a new offensive coordinator in Kevin Barbay, who was an offensive assistant at Kentucky.
