AL Wild Card Race Heating Up the Junior Circuit

The American League has been mediocre, at best, this season. It’s easy to see that the Junior Circuit has been exactly that in comparison to the Senior Circuit. Entering play on Saturday, the National League has four teams with 80-plus wins. The AL has half of that. The entirety of the AL has five teams with positive run differentials, while the NL has nine. But perhaps the biggest discrepancy is the record of each league’s playoff teams. The Junior Circuit’s current postseason clubs have a combined .541 record, while the NL’s playoff clubs own a .577 record.
The AL Wild Card Race
In the midst of that relative weakness, the AL Wild Card race has opened up the postseason for plenty of mediocre teams. The Cleveland Guardians currently own the final spot in the postseason, just two games over .500. Immediately behind the Guards are the Toronto Blue Jays (71-71), Texas Rangers (70-72), Baltimore Orioles (69-73) and Minnesota Twins (67-74). Of that group, the furthest back are the Twins (4.5 games back), while the Jays are just a game behind Cleveland. With less than a month left before the end of the season, the state of the AL could quickly change.

The five teams vying for the final AL Wild Card spot face each other several times in September, with plenty of change in the standings possible. The Blue Jays have the most to lose, playing three of their final six series versus playoff hopefuls. All of the teams in the AL East teams are in a playoff chase, with the Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox having their spots mostly locked up. The Jays and O’s are in the mix for that final spot, but need to prove themselves a bit more to beat out the other contenders.

CLE v. BAL (9/7-9)

They’ll face off later this week, giving Baltimore a chance to win the season series with a sweep. However, Cleveland has been hotter lately, winning six of their last 10 and being on a two-game win streak. The Guards need to maintain that pace to help secure their playoff spot. If Cleveland can sweep Baltimore, it might keep the O’s out of playoff contention for good. On the other hand, if Baltimore gets hot against Cleveland, it could spell a postseason run for the Orioles.
BAL v. TOR (9/11-13)

If they can win against Cleveland and Toronto, the Orioles might manage to sneak into the playoffs. On the other side, Toronto needs to win this series to make up ground over the Guardians. The Jays are on the brink of a monumental collapse after winning the AL pennant last season. They’ve underwhelmed immensely this year but could salvage the season with a trip to the playoffs.
CLE v. MIN (9/11-13)

Minnesota needs to win just about every game to have any hope of gaining momentum in the postseason race. The AL Wild Card is tight, but the Twins could sneak in with a hot streak. Cleveland currently holds onto the final Wild Card spot, but they need to continue their winning ways to keep their playoff spot.
TOR v. TEX (9/18-20)

If Texas manages to win against the defending AL champions, it could mean them securing a playoff berth for the first time since the Rangers won it all in 2023. The two contenders faced off in June, with Texas sweeping Toronto at Rogers Centre. They’ll play one another again in the final weeks of the season with much more on the line.
TOR v. BAL (9/21-23)

This series will be the second matchup of September between the two, with the O’s hoping to make up ground in the season series. Toronto and Baltimore split the first series in May before the Jays won the second series. This last series will have much more weight, with the postseason just a week away. The final AL Wild Card spot could very well be decided by this matchup.
TEX v. MIN (9/25-27)

If anything, this matchup is likely to be more important for the Rangers than for Minnesota. The Twins are far outside the playoff picture but have time to make it up before the final series of the regular season. Texas has struggled lately, losing four of their last 10 and falling behind the Astros in the AL West division. The Rangers will need to turn things around against Minnesota. Texas was swept by the Twins in their only other series back in June.
