Dave Portnoy Makes Absolutely Disastrous Football Bet: ‘I’m Sick to My Stomach’

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy found himself on the wrong end of a calamitous college football bet that was so errant that he posted a video calling himself “a f*cking moron” before the game was even over.

On Thursday, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights hosted the UMass Minutemen in what was the first game of the season for each team. Rutgers, a Big Ten team, went 5-7 last season. UMass, meanwhile, went 0-12 and had not won a game since Oct. 26, 2024, and had never defeated a team from a power conference.

Shortly before kickoff, Portnoy tweeted that he had just made what “may be my strongest play of the year.” He said he wagered that Rutgers, a 29.5-point favorite, would not only cover the spread, but win by 40 or more.

“I made my 1st bet of college football season and it may be my strongest play of the year,” he tweeted. “Rutgers -29.5 to beat umass by 40 plus.”

UMass had other designs. After Rutgers took an early 7-0 lead, UMass scored 30 unanswered points and coasted to a 37-21 victory.

With UMass leading 24-7, Portnoy, who did not say how much he bet on the game, posted a video on X to rant about the game and offer a mea culpa.

“I gave out Rutgers as my pick of the week, minus 29 and a half,” Portnoy began. “I said, I think this game is gonna be so easy. It may be the pick of year, and I believed it. I put my hard-earned money on it with DraftKings. Well, they’re down 24-7. It could be 54-7. [Rutgers head coach] Greg Schiano looks like he’s on sedatives on the sideline… You’re getting your ass f*cking kicked, and by ergo [sic], I’m getting my ass kicked by a UMass team that won – count ’em – zero games last year. A [Mid-American Conference] team is kicking the sh*t out of a Big Ten team. Big Ten, 31-0 against MAC teams the last three years. I’m not gonna point the finger at Schiano. I’m gonna point the finger at Rutgers football, which is the most embarrassing group of losers I’ve ever seen. I’m gonna point the finger at me and say, ‘Hey Dave, you’re a f*cking moron and you gotta be better.’ And I deserve freezing-cold takes to retweet me and put me on a poster. Not gonna blame this inept Rutgers team and say that Rutgers should be kicked out of the Big Ten and let UMass in, and you gotta fire Schiano at halftime for this disgrace. No. The buck stops with me. That was the worst pick. I’m sick to my stomach.”
