Team USA tips off their FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup campaign in Berlin on September 4th against China. Headlined by superstars Caitlin Clark, Breanna Stewart, and Napheesa Collier, the stacked American roster will be without A’ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum, who pulled out.
However, there are questions over whether Clark will start for Team USA, despite her record-breaking season with the Indiana Fever in the WNBA.
Rachel DeMita, a sports host, and former college basketball player, best known for hosting NBA 2KTV and covering digital basketball media, has weighed in on the debate.
She believes that history shows Caitlin Clark could play a bench role at the upcoming World Cup.
DeMita said: “This is kind of her first senior international display. I think there’s gonna be a lot of noise if and when she doesn’t start, but I’m not sure she’s going to start.
“Because even if we look back at the qualifying rounds, she didn’t start. I think they played like 5 or 6 games, and she was the last person to enter the starting lineup. I think they changed the starting lineup literally every game, and she was the last person. She was the only one by the last game who hadn’t started yet.”
Caitlin Clark is delivering a career-best campaign, averaging 22.5 points, 8.4 assists, and shooting over 45% from the field. As the WNBA‘s top playmaker and one of the most lethal perimeter weapons, her ability to orchestrate the offense while elite-scoring demands an undeniable starting berth.
