What Kansas football coach Lance Leipold’s injury update outlined

LAWRENCE — Lance Leipold’s press conference Monday, looking ahead to Friday’s season opener at home against LIU, covered a wide range of topics.

Leipold, Kansas football’s head coach, detailed why the team decided to choose redshirt sophomore Isaiah Marshall as the team’s starting quarterback. Marshall won the job after a competition with redshirt junior quarterback Cole Ballard. Leipold analyzed the depth chart, released that day as well.
But as the Jayhawks look ahead to a matchup against LIU that’ll open the 2026 campaign, are there any injury situations fans should know about? Is anyone going to be unavailable for that game, who has recently been needing to get healthier? Here’s what Leipold had to say.
“Don’t know yet where Cam (Pickett) will be at this time, we’ll know as the week goes on, he did not practice today,” Leipold said. “We’ll get more into injury reports as we going through things. Kory Amachree is another one that, I can probably let you know now, that Kory was injured earlier and will be out for an extended period of time.”
Pickett, a redshirt senior wide receiver, was second on the team in receiving yards last season and tied for the team lead in receptions. A former transfer from Ball State, he established himself as a valuable member of the offense. While KU should be able to defeat LIU without him, his presence as the season unfolds will be vital.
Amachree, a freshman running back, had put himself in position to receive playing time this fall. That he won’t be available for a period of time, is a hit to the running backs room as a whole. Kansas already knew redshirt freshman running back Justin Thurman would miss the season due to injury.
On the depth chart, the player listed as Pickett’s backup is sophomore wide receiver Tate Nagy. Associate head coach Andy Kotelnicki explained that while that’s the case, what the Jayhawks are going to do is make sure that they do what they can to put the best players they can into the game for the situation at hand. Kotelnicki detailed that he’s confident in what Nagy can do, but the answer to a wide receiver potentially being unavailable could both mean another wide receiver coming in or the team turning to a tight end or a running back.
