‘You Have to Know’ — Caleb Downs Reveals the Mindset Separating Ready Players From the Rest

· Yahoo Sports

Caleb Downs is not interested in convincing himself that he’s ready; however, he wants to know it.

That difference sounds small, however, for the Dallas Cowboys’ first-round pick, it is everything. Downs has spent the summer testing himself against CeeDee Lamb,George Pickens, and other elite receivers, using those reps to remove the doubt that can follow any rookie into his first NFL season.

Downs explained that his confidence comes from repeatedly facing the players who will make his NFL transition difficult. Rather than simply telling himself he belongs, the rookie wants enough evidence from practice to trust his preparation when the games matter.

“I would just say… Reps against the best. That’s the best way I can put it. Trying to find ways to go against CeeDee. Trying to find ways to go against GP. Everybody like that… To get those reps to know.

One of my college coaches said… ‘You can’t believe in a game. You have to know.’ You have to know…I prepared for it. I’ve done this. If it’s belief… There’s an ounce of doubt in there.

So it’s just getting to that point where… Okay, I know. I know what I’m doing. I know who I am against anybody on the field. It doesn’t matter who’s out there.”

That mindset came from one of his college coaches, who taught him that belief still leaves room for doubt. Knowing, as Downs explained, means reaching the point where there is no hesitation about what he can do or who he is facing.

That is why the Cowboys’ rookie has welcomed the daily challenge of lining up against Lamb and Pickens. He has also seen Puka Nacua during joint work, giving him a steady stream of elite receivers to study and compete against.

For Downs, those matchups are more than impressive training-camp clips. They are preparation. The No. 11 overall pick has already shown the versatility that the Cowboys wanted when it selected him. Defensive coordinator Christian Parker has used him in the slot and at safety, while his physicality gives the Cowboys another option against receivers who constantly move around the formation.

Downs also understands that mistakes are part of the process. The important part is what happens on the next snap. The Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer has already praised that trait, noting that Downs does not repeat his mistakes. That has allowed the rookie to play faster as the playbook and responsibilities begin to settle in.

For Downs, the difference is simple. Belief can still contain doubt. Knowing comes from preparation, repetition, and proving to yourself that you can handle the moment. The Cowboys drafted Downs, expecting him to become a difference-maker, but he appears determined to make sure he knows he can.
