NFL Rumors Tie Atlanta Falcons To Trade For A Quarterback

There’s an old saying suggesting that when a team has two quarterbacks, it’s like they have none at all. Is that where the Atlanta Falcons are as the 2026 season approaches? Former Pro Bowl QB Tua Tagovailoa has struggled in training camp and the early portion of the preseason, and Michael Penix Jr. just started practicing in new coach Kevin Stefanski’s offense last week.

Now, some NFL rumors are suggesting that the Falcons could make a trade for another quarterback.

Could Kevin Stefanski Bring Dillon Gabriel to the Atlanta Falcons?

Right now, as the Falcons are trying to determine which players they want to keep as the roster is trimmed from 90 players down to 53, they have four QBs on the team. They are Tagovailoa, Penix, undrafted rookie Jack Strand, and veteran Cooper Rush. Chances are they’ll keep two or three on the active roster, and another on the practice squad. Yet, there’s still the possibility that the Falcons add another arm to their QB room.

Recently, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk raised the idea of the Falcons possibly trading for one of coach Stefanski’s former pupils, Cleveland Browns QB Dillon Gabriel.

“Gabriel, who had a near-perfect passer rating against the Patriots of 157.9 with three touchdown passes on 15 throws, could be traded. And the most obvious destination would be Atlanta, where former Browns coach Kevin Stefanski has a potential none-of-the-above situation as Week 1 approaches.”

Last offseason, when the Browns were seeking to improve their QB room, they settled on selecting Gabriel with the 94th overall pick in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The 5-foot-11 QB ended up making 10 appearances while leading the Browns to a 1-5 record as a starter.

Just 25 years old, Gabriel completed 59.5% of his passes for 937 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions, taking 19 sacks in the process. He also rushed for 86 yards on 14 attempts.

Gabriel is one of four quarterbacks on the Browns’ roster, so it’s possible the team is entertaining a trade involving the second-year QB. If so, the Falcons could be one of the teams that comes calling.
